Marketing controls the way your company offers its value proposition to the public; it’s absolutely vital to any business because of its deep ties to a company’s consumer base. Whether you’d like to manage social media, organize email newsletters or create vibrant content for a company blog, your role in marketing will help to promote the business to the people who don’t know about your services or your product. It will also create invaluable, personal connections between you and your audience, so if you’re interested in marketing, the tips below will help you prepare to be the master of your craft.

Be creative and numbers driven at the same time.

Most people see themselves as either creative or analytical, but in marketing, you have to do both.  You have to be able to think of incredible and engaging campaigns that will lure your users into whatever you’re selling – content, services, a particular product – and ensure that they keep coming back for more. At the same time, being numbers-driven is key: You can have a fantastic idea, but if it doesn’t resonate, then the business won’t continue to grow. You need to be quick with experimenting your idea, test it out with a small group of people and then give a rapid and detailed analysis about if it’s working or not – and if it’s not, then you’ll have to go back to the brainstorming board.

Know your audience.

You can’t even begin to come up with ideas and campaigns – let alone be a great marketer – without knowing who your audience is, what they’re interested in and how they like to be spoken to. Your vision and understanding of your audience affects the direction of the company’s success because without a loyal, engaged, growing audience, your company will not be able to survive.

Use your data on users to create a detailed profile of your audience moving forward. If you construct the image and personality of your audience, you will be so much better equipped to move forward with marketing campaigns tailored to your audience, adding personality and innovation on a large scale.

Rely on smart tools to help you do your job better.

It’s absolutely impossible to be in marketing without having incredible tools that will help you carry out your campaigns and measure their effectiveness. Tools like Hootsuite for social media, Mailchimp for email marketing and Piktochart for images and design are just a few powerful tools that can be a part of your arsenal; it’s your job to do your homework, see what will work best for your company and your role and then master those tools to better understand your audience and what excites them.

If you don’t have all the skills on this list, you have the time to acquire them- a lot of them come with experience! Oh, and speaking of which, we have plenty of internships and entry-level jobs in marketing – so don’t forget to sign up for WayUp :).
