World AIDS Day: Show Your Solidarity With an Internship

Yesterday marked the celebration of World AIDS Day, which was established in 1988 as a day to express solidarity in the global fight against HIV and to honor those individuals who we have lost in the struggle. All around the world NGOs, non-profits, government agencies and activists stood in unity with those battling HIV and with those working tirelessly to find a cure for the disease.

Here at WayUp we stand in stand in solidarity as well.

In honor of the day, we spent yesterday highlighting a few internships for those interested in joining the cause to help provide HIV/AIDS awareness. An estimated 33 million people are living with HIV. The work of these organizations helps those individuals get access to critical medicine and helps support HIV/AIDS outreach education.

From Spain to Silicon Valley, A Life Changing Experience For Top Engineering Students

Not all cities are created equal when it comes to opportunities for a student to take entrepreneurial risks and start their own company. In fact, it is often argued that no where else in the world compares to Silicon Valley both for the amount of available startup capital, but more importantly the willingness of the people in Silicon Valley to suspend disbelief and support the grandiose visions of entrepreneurs young and old.

One of the biggest issues facing entrepreneurs in countries outside the United States is how failure is treated.  While Silicon Valley respects entrepreneurs who have tried, failed, and learned from their mistakes, in other countries including Italy, China, Russia, and many more, failure is seen as unacceptable and those who try and fail are thrown under the bus.  This creates huge problems for fostering a rich tech community where over 90% of companies are expected to fail but those that succeed make up the difference by many fold.

Enter StepOne an innovative program based in Spain and started by Google’s Head of Emerging Products Bernardo Hernandez.  The program seeks to bridge the gap between Spain’s top engineering students and the cutting edge ideas and culture of Silicon Valley.  Spain’s top engineering students compete to be accepted into the program which places them at a leading US startup for an internship that can last anywhere from three to nine months.  The goal is to have some of these students stay on at companies in the states, learning entrepreneurial and coding best practices that eventually will be brought back to Spain to help invigorate their burgeoning startup community.

Despite growing technical talent in other country’s around the world, the success of Silicon Valley has never been repeated, and it is exciting to see how StepOne approaches the challenge with thoughtfulness and a long term perspective.

We have been working with StepOne to help match their students with great startup companies and the degree of talent and excitement is incredible.  This video helps to showcase some of this years StepOne interns and the life-changing experience the program helped them discover.

The NBA Lockout Has Ended: Get Ready to Intern

Black Friday wasn’t the only exciting thing that happened over the weekend. While shoppers were busy searching the malls for awesome deals, NBA owners and players were busy negotiating a deal to end the 149-day NBA lockout. In the wee hours of the morning, after several weeks of negotiations, the NBA announced a tentative deal to end the 5-month lockout – with the 66-game season scheduled to resume on Christmas day.

Basketball fanatics were excited, players were excited (check out their responses on Twitter) and naturally, we were excited as well! The end of the lockout will hopefully mean more internship opportunities for students. Even NBA players like Blake Griffin of the LA Clippers and Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia 76ers, made the most of their break by interning.

To celebrate the lockout ending, we have combined a list of internship opportunities for our basketball enthusiasts. While the NBA has not updated the announcement for its Summer Internship Program, check out the list below for several franchise teams and stadiums currently offering internship positions.

Internship Spotlight: The National Audubon Society

Remember the Deepwater Horizon oil spill
– the one that left thousands of birds and wildlife without a home? Have you ever wondered what happened to the oil-soaked birds that were impacted by that tragedy? Or maybe what happens next to ensure that those responsible for this national disaster are held accountable to pay for the clean-up of their mess and adequate ecosystem restoration?

Meet the National Audubon Society

As one of the nation’s most prestigious environmental advocacy and conservation organizations, the National Audubon Society was one of the first groups on the scene to help guide and coordinate emergency response efforts for the birds and wildlife impacted by the oil spill – and are now working to pass legislation that will dedicate resources to the Gulf to pay for cleanup and restoration of the damaged coastal environment. This spring, their Washington, DC office is looking for a Public Policy Intern.

Interns in Audubon’s DC office will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with Audubon’s policy advocates and lobbyists. A typical day could include: researching and preparing fact-sheets, “Hill drops,” assisting with outreach, representing Audubon in meetings with other environmental groups, monitoring Congressional hearings and preparing briefing materials.

Internship Perks…

The opportunity to participate on Audubon’s “green team” softball team – the Scrubjays – and all of the free bird-friendly coffee that your heart desires!

Jay-Z is famous for saying he is a business, because he is so good at making money that he became a brand. While you’re not Jay-Z yet, a really good business card will help you build your personal brand by letting an employer know what you care about or excel at.

Let’s say you are interested in marine biology, you put your favorite whale on the front of your card and I guarantee environmental NFPs will take notice at your next career fair or interview. Or lets say you are interested in finance, make a professional card with a quote from Warren Buffett on the back. There is just so much you can do to customize the look and feel of your business cards to ensure you make the impression you want.

(However, if you’re running out of ideas or don’t want to pigeon hole yourself with a single design, then a great fall back is to simply add your college crest to your card with your name, contact info, and a link to any urls or portfolios you have online).
