Ever since our team decided on the name change, we’ve been jamming out to Big Sean’s “Blessings”– he says “way up” 15 times (yes, we counted). Now that it’s been three days since the announcement, we’re still pretty excited.
Why? Our CEO Liz put it best, but in short, we’re psyched to have a name that fits. Yes, we became so much more than getting students campus jobs, but our old name also didn’t encompass the inspirational edge and drive we feel when we come to work every single day. It’d be as if Rihanna went by her real name; we’d all be saying, “That was a cool Robyn Fenty concert last night.” Or worse, if T.I. never changed his name: “Yeah, Clifford Harris was on fire last night!” Campus Job was a total Clifford Harris: It simply didn’t sound right anymore.
We also knew we needed a change when we started offering full-time jobs, and recent grads would email us asking if we had plans to guide their career search. It was simultaneously amazing (like an audience of recent grads asking for a WayUp encore) and face-palm worthy (Guys, we’ve seriously got you covered!), and we definitely got tired of the ever-so-classic, “So, what do you do?” conversations at parties and social outings where friends of friends assumed they understood our company, just after we said the name.
So, in a story that perfectly embodies everything we stand for, our two summer interns that we hired through WayUp, Hannah and Jess, holed away in our frat-themed conference room (shown on the right) and came up with the name that you now see on our website, in our email signatures and on TechCrunch and Forbes. They changed our lives, just as we hope to continue changing the lives of the students and recent grads who come to us to find their way through the job search, who send us the heart-warming emails we pass around to our entire office that say, “I just got hired! Thank you so much for creating this site.” (Did you know that 34% of users who apply for a job on WayUp get hired?!) We couldn’t be prouder of what this company has become and what we will accomplish on this new adventure. Forget vacay, we feel better at work. (That was a lyric reference, everyone, you’ve got to listen to the song).
So if you haven’t already, join us on WayUp — even with our new name, our job is still to get you a job and to keep up our reputation as the #1 online marketplace for students and recent grads to find one-time gigs, part-time jobs, internships and full-time jobs. And honestly, we couldn’t feel more blessed about that.
