What It’s Like to Be an Introvert at a Networking Event

Networking is hard – especially for those of us who would rather be at home watching Netflix (or curled up reading a really great book!).  Shout out to all our introverts on the job search right now because we know exactly how you feel…

First of all, can we all agree that this is the worst?

There are just so many uncomfortable things happening in one room. Exhibit A, the fact that you just walked in and recognize no one.

Exhibit B, the fact that you can cut the job-seeking desperation in the room with a knife. It’s like being dropped into The Hunger Games.

You’re seriously expected to just walk up to some rando and strike up a conversation. What do you even say besides, “Hi, my name is…”?

career networking

Probably best to target a group of people already engaged in conversation.

Great. Now, you’re that creepy person who silently slid into the conversation. Please, please, someone turn and acknowledge that you’re here.

What are they even talking about anyway? Current events? Argh, you knew you should’ve skimmed the news instead of G-Chatting your bestie last night!!!

Whatever, just smile and nod.

This one girl is talking about herself a lot. Like, A LOT.

awkward conversation

Hey, wanna let the 5 other people in the circle weigh in?

Yes, the employer next to you just turned and asked about what you’re studying!

success

Side conversation for the win!!

…Aaaand then just asked, “You’re an English major? What do you plan on doing with that?”

existential crisis

Casual question or recurring nightmare?

Actually, this isn’t terrible. In fact, the conversation’s going pretty well.

Maybe you’ll actually get a business card out of this.

And if the conversation dies before you do, you can always regroup in the bathroom before round 2.

Go get ‘em, champ.

How is it that something so valuable is simultaneously so awkward? We’re still not sure, but we’re glad WayUp is around to help!
