Job Summary:
The Lab General Manager is responsible for the oversight and management of two laboratory practices which include 13 pathologists and 92 employees across 17 hospital contracts and 7 hospital sites. This position ensures efficient operations, quality control, compliance, and effective communication with hospital executives. The role also involves budget management, performance reviews, and strategic planning to optimize lab services and revenue. With responsibilities that extend to operational and administrative functions, this leadership role requires a strong combination of technical and managerial skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Management:
- Oversee day-to-day operations of two lab practices and ensure smooth coordination across 7 hospital sites staffed by pathologists.
- Direct and manage 92 employees, including 12 couriers, each with a vehicle.
- Ensure seamless laboratory operations, making final decisions on key operational aspects and supervising laboratory supervisory staff.
- Travel up to 200 miles per month as needed for site visits and operational oversight.
Staff and Pathologist Management:
- Lead and manage 13 pathologists, evaluating their performance and ensuring high standards of medical care and diagnostics.
- Support and advise laboratory supervisory staff, maintaining high levels of team performance.
- Oversee credentialing efforts performed by other staff members to ensure compliance and credential accuracy.
Communication and Client Relations:
- Act as the primary liaison between the laboratory and major hospital executives, including C-suite leaders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with healthcare providers, hospitals, and stakeholders to ensure client satisfaction and high-quality service.
- Review and assist the Revenue Cycle Management team in optimizing financial performance.
Financial Management:
- Oversee budgeting processes, revenue forecasting, expense management, and salary planning.
- Evaluate and approve accounting invoices, ensuring accuracy and timely payment.
- Lead capital equipment evaluations, including automation technologies to improve lab efficiency and effectiveness.
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
- Maintain strict quality control measures to ensure lab results are accurate and reliable.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations such as CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and other relevant standards.
- Lead audits and implement corrective actions as necessary to ensure the lab meets all regulatory requirements.
Strategic Planning and Development:
- Develop and execute strategic plans to enhance laboratory services and expand hospital contracts.
- Identify opportunities for implementing new technologies and automation to improve operations and drive growth.
- Manage and advise the laboratory team on capital equipment purchases and ensure equipment is up-to-date and effective.
Revenue Cycle and Administrative Functions:
- Review and support efforts related to revenue cycle management, ensuring efficient billing and payment processes.
- Oversee administrative functions, including approval of accounting invoices, staff payroll, and general financial oversight.
Health and Safety Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with health and safety protocols, promoting a safe working environment for all lab employees.
- Stay up-to-updated on industry best practices and ensure all staff are trained on proper safety and laboratory protocols.
Qualifications and Skills:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field required.
- Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of laboratory experience, with at least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
- Experience managing pathologists and working with hospital contracts is highly preferred.
Skills:
- Strong leadership and staff management skills, with a proven ability to motivate and guide large teams.
- Excellent communication skills, with experience interfacing with hospital C-suites and other executives.
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory processes, regulatory standards, and financial management.
- Budgeting and financial planning expertise, with experience in revenue cycle management and capital equipment evaluations.
- Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) and healthcare software (Epic, etc.).
Working Conditions:
- Lab and hospital site environments with occasional travel (up to 200 miles per month).
- A fast-paced and high-stakes environment requiring attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.
- Regular communication with senior hospital executives and pathologists.
Salary and Shift:
- Day shift: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:30pm
- Salary Range: $95,000 - $130,000 annually.
