Position Title: Laboratory Supervisor – Clinical Mass Spectrometry
Salary Range: $56,730 to $96,440 (depending on experience)

Summary
The Laboratory Supervisor provides operational oversight and technical expertise for the Clinical Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, which includes the Toxicology and Biochemical Genetics sections. This role ensures laboratory operations meet regulatory and quality standards while fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment. The supervisor supports staff development, manages laboratory workflows, and contributes to the laboratory's strategic planning.
Responsibilities
Operational Oversight
- Supervise and provide daily administrative oversight of personnel performing high-complexity testing.
- Schedule and coordinate staff to ensure adequate and equitable coverage of laboratory operations.
- Monitor and optimize laboratory workflows for maximum productivity and quality.
- Serve as a technical resource for staff and external collaborators, addressing procedural and technical challenges.
- Implement new or revised policies and procedures within the laboratory framework.
- Establish and maintain a safe working environment that supports staff well-being.
Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Compliance
- Ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance for all test analyses and specimen examinations.
- Oversee quality control measures, ensuring prompt remedial actions when performance specifications deviate.
- Monitor laboratory compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP).
- Review and approve high-complexity test results performed by qualifying personnel in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Participate in and coordinate the laboratory's Quality Assurance Program.
Staff Orientation, Training, and Competency
- Oversee orientation, training, and competency evaluations for laboratory personnel.
- Approve and monitor training checklists, ensuring all staff are properly trained and competent before performing independent testing.
- Ensure the maintenance of comprehensive performance competency documentation.
Personnel Management
- Conduct performance evaluations, identify skill gaps, and address educational needs for staff.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback, counsel employees as necessary, and enforce attendance policies.
- Approve payroll, vacation requests, and other time-off requests.
- Foster a motivating and enriching environment that promotes professional development and efficient workflows.
- Assist in staff development through continuing education opportunities and training.
Management and Strategic Planning
- Collaborate with management to optimize laboratory workflows and plan for future growth and improvements.
- Contribute to the selection of new procedures, equipment, and staff for the laboratory.
- Evaluate and recommend operational changes to improve laboratory performance.
- Keep the Administrative Manager informed of significant issues, procedural changes, or concerns.
Technical Expertise and Testing
- Maintain expertise in laboratory instrumentation and methodologies, including GC, HPLC, GC-MS, TOF-MS, ICP-MS, and LC-MS/MS.
- Perform testing as needed to ensure seamless operations during short-staffed situations.

Received
- Reports to the Administrative Manager or a designated supervisor.
Exercised
- Administrative and functional supervision of specimen processors, phlebotomists, LPNs, laboratory technicians, medical technologists, specialists, and senior technologists.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a directly related biological science field.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist.
- Minimum of 6 years of clinical laboratory experience.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, sit, hand pipette for long periods, and lift up to 25 lbs.
Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience managing professional and support staff in a CLIA-compliant laboratory.
- Familiarity with therapeutic drug monitoring and toxicology analysis methodologies.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Proven ability to train, mentor, and supervise laboratory personnel effectively.
- Excellent multitasking, prioritization, and judgment skills.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time, 40-hour position with responsibilities on the day shift. Includes rotating weekends, holidays, and on-call duties. Approximately 24 hours per week (60%) will be allocated for supervisory tasks, with flexibility depending on laboratory needs and pending projects.
