    Shift: 3rd Shift (11:00 PM – 7:00 AM)

    Job Summary

    The Medical Technologist in the Blood Bank department supports critical laboratory operations during the 3rd shift, performing specialized testing and ensuring safe and compatible blood transfusions for patients. This role requires precision, adherence to regulatory standards, and a commitment to excellent patient care.

    Compensation

    • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS): $29.42 - $43.07 per hour (based on experience)
    • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): $21.32 - $31.98 per hour (based on experience)
    • 3rd Shift Differential: Additional $3.50 per hour

    Key Responsibilities

    Technical Duties
    • Perform blood bank testing, including blood typing, antibody screening, crossmatching, and antibody identification.
    • Prepare, test, and issue blood and blood products while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
    • Utilize advanced immunohematology techniques and operate automated blood bank analyzers.
    • Monitor and maintain adequate blood inventory levels, including emergency stock management.
    • Accurately document results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and review records for accuracy.
    Compliance & Quality Assurance
    • Adhere to all regulatory standards, including AABB, FDA, CAP, and Joint Commission requirements.
    • Conduct quality control tests and document results to maintain regulatory compliance.
    • Participate in proficiency testing and contribute to laboratory quality improvement initiatives.
    Collaboration & Communication
    • Collaborate with healthcare providers to interpret results and guide transfusion decisions.
    • Communicate critical test findings promptly to ensure timely patient care.
    • Coordinate with other departments to facilitate seamless laboratory operations during the overnight shift.
    Training & Development
    • Support the training of new staff and students in blood bank procedures.
    • Stay updated on advancements in transfusion medicine and laboratory technology through ongoing education.

    Qualifications

    Education & Certification
    • MLS: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field and ASCP (or equivalent) certification.
    • MLT: Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field and ASCP (or equivalent) certification.
    Experience
    • Blood banking or transfusion services experience preferred, but new graduates are encouraged to apply.
    Skills
    • Proficient in laboratory techniques, including immunohematology.
    • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
    • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
    • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR).

    Work Environment

    This position operates in a clinical laboratory environment with exposure to biohazardous materials. Adherence to strict safety protocols is required. 3rd shift roles provide critical overnight support for the laboratory's 24/7 operations.
