    ABOUT THE POSITION:

    In this critical new role to the organization, the Pathology Operations Manager provides leadership and supports system functions through collaboration, standardization, integration, and oversight of related services. Responsible for managing assigned selected aspects of laboratory processes or shifts, which may include workflow, writing/reviewing procedures, performance improvement activities, training of new employees, advanced problem solving for customers and coworkers, department equipment or computer maintenance and upgrades, or other tasks assigned. Assists department leadership with meeting goals in all areas. Actively manages daily operations of the Pathology laboratory, within approved operational and capital budgets, meeting departmental goals in all Extending Excellence areas: Teams, Service, Clinical, Market, and Finance. Various pre-and post-analytical work processes are included in the work duties customarily performed. Follows laboratory policies and procedures in the Pathology Laboratory. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

    PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Demonstrates managerial behaviors appropriate to the position. Participates as a member of various committees, teams and councils for Pathology Laboratory as assigned.
    • Prepares and manages, under the direction of Director of Operations, an operating budget that ensures appropriate staffing, professional development, space, supplies, and equipment, necessary for improving and maintaining the quality of services.
    • Develops and oversees the development of new procedures or processes in the document control system. Ensures that procedures are reviewed at specific intervals and meet regulatory requirements.
    • Manages budgeting, department metrics, department goals, quality initiatives, strategic initiatives, department inventory expenses and labor productivity.
    • Manage departmental supply expenses by reducing waste. Introduce and manage cost saving initiatives as identified.
    • Ensures staff scheduling is flexed according to workload. Ensure overtime is justified and casual overtime is eliminated.
    • Represents the laboratory in either a leadership or at organizational multidisciplinary or leadership meetings.
    • Recognizes that the attainment of knowledge is every employee's responsibility & accepts accountability for staying current on all written or electronic communication.
    • Manages quality assessment and oversight, problem solving, scheduling, interviewing applicants, provides input for staff performance, oversees training and competency evaluations.
    • Manages employees in hiring, coaching, or termination with limited supervision from leadership. Supervises, manages, leads, engages and mentor's department staff. Provides resolution to complex customer service issues by utilizing professional, mature judgment. Provides education to department staff, and hospital staff as needed.
    • Assists the laboratory management with data collection and special projects as assigned.
    • Manages instrument maintenance and troubleshooting practices.
    • Provides orientation and training for new employees as needed, under the direction of the lab leadership.
    • Provides guidance to staff, resolution to customer service issues within guidelines, and support education to clinical staff as appropriate or requested. Facilitates workflow when necessary.
    • Actively leads and participates in laboratory Performance Improvement activities. Actively promotes team building and employee engagement, patient satisfaction, and a culture of safety for employees and patients. Utilizes knowledge of hospital Performance Improvement activities and strategic goals.
    • Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.
    • Follows and ensures adherence of staff to the Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; always protects confidentiality of patient information and results.
    • Ability to work independently and adapt to varying priorities, including directing workflow with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to maintain equipment/records and perform quality assessment activities.
    • Ability to monitor staff productivity and provide coaching feedback to increase quality and productivity standards.
    • Ability to educate and train new staff in medical laboratory settings.
    • Able to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners, and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner.
    • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office. Ability to operate computer systems to maintain patient documentation, testing records, and other important information.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology
    • Five year of experience as a Histology technician/technologist in a Histology laboratory setting
    • One year of leadership/management experience
    • Experience with supporting accreditation, compliance, and inspections for governing bodies a plus

    LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

    • Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent
