    Position Purpose:

    This position is created under the requirements of the River Skimming Program Operations and Maintenance agreement between Veolia and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). This agreement requires that Veolia provide crew members to assist the boat captain for the District’s river skimming vessel.

    This is a seasonal, hourly paid position of approximately 1,000 hours between April and November. The position will require some scheduled weekend work and other weekly hours may vary depending on weather conditions and situations that affect the skimmer operations. The river skimmer boat crew member is expected to assist with the safe and effective operation of the MMSD vessel for the collection of floating debris from the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnikinnic Rives, the Burnham Shipping Canal, and Milwaukee Estuary as well as areas of the Inner Harbor, as defined in the River Skimmer Agreement with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage.

    Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Required to follow all applicable safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in performance of assigned duties. Is required to participate in all required safety training activities. Is expected to report any unsafe conditions encountered in performance of duties.
    • Assist with general maintenance and cleaning of the river skimmer boat and debris conveyors.
    • Assist with the safe operation of the river skimmer boat at all times.
    • Assist the Boat Captain to carry out the skimming services for debris removal on the waterways.
    • Assist in the proper disposal of the collected debris at the designated sites.
    • Assist the boat captain with routine maintenance of the boat and/or promptly reporting of any more major maintenance or repair issues to the Captain.
    • Communicates effectively via written and oral methods with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and others when necessary.
    • Performs other duties of a similar level and nature as assigned.

    Work Environment:

    • This work is performed regularly performed in an outside environment, including in inclement weather.
    • The noise level for this environment is moderate.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Education/Experience/Background:

    • High School Diploma/GED is required.
    • Two years of hands-on labor experience in industrial, construction and/or maintenance preferred.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Ability to conduct trash collection work in a professional manner under conditions found in the Milwaukee area rivers, estuary, and inner harbor areas.
    • Ability to follow instructions from the boat captain in a professional manner.
    • Willingness to work the assigned hours including on weekends as required.
    • Ability to properly identify and use job-related tools, gauges, equipment and machinery in compliance with safety procedures.
    • Strong mechanical aptitude preferred.
    • Basic skills in computers and data input devices, email, application and office software.

    Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

    • First aid and CPR certification within six months of appointment.

    Physical Requirements:

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently be required to stand, talk, hear, operate a variety to mechanical and electrical equipment in a moving boat, and lift objects up to 50 pounds and heavier objects.
    • The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance visions with mechanical assistance.
