    Lighthouse Lab Services is working with a large plasma donation chain seeking part-time technical consultants under CLIA to oversee at minimum one location in Vista, California, but potentially more locations depending on convenience and the location of the Technical Consultant.

    The Technical Consultant will work limited hours (up to 4 hours per month). The majority of the work can be done from a remote location; however, for this particular opportunity onsite visits may be required as often as once per month, including initial onsite training.

    This is a perfect opportunity for someone who meets Technical Consultant requirements in California under CLIA and is looking for some supplementary income and potential future opportunities as a Lighthouse Consultant.

    Compensation:

    • $425/mo for approximately 4 hours of strictly remote work, minimum one year contract.
    • $650/mo for approximately 4 hours of work, including an onsite visit.

    Duties:

    The technical consultant is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory.

    • The technical consultant must be accessible to the laboratory to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation.
    • Verification of the test procedure(s) performed.
    • Enrollment and participation in an HHS-approved proficiency testing program.
    • Maintain a Quality Control Program appropriate for the testing performed to ensure acceptable levels of performance and ensuring that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of the specimen, through sample analysis and reporting of test results.
    • Resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
    • Ensuring that test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functional.
    • Identifying training needs and assuring that each individual performing tests receives regular in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed.
    • Evaluating the competency of all testing personnel and assuring that the staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report results promptly, accurately, and proficiently. The evaluation of the competency of staff must include, but are not limited to:
      • Direct observations of routine patient test performance, including donor preparation, if applicable, specimen handling, processing, and testing.
      • Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results.
      • Review of test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records.
      • Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks.
      • Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples.
      • Assessment of problem-solving skills.
      • The evaluation and documentation of the performance of individuals responsible for moderate complexity testing will occur at least semi-annually during the first year the individual tests donor samples. Thereafter, evaluation and documentation must be performed at least annually, except for labs in California where the evaluation will be performed every 6 months (CA Bus & Prof Code § 1246.7(8)).
      • In cases where the test methodology or instrumentation has changed, the testing individual’s performance must be reevaluated to include the use of the new test methodology or instrumentation prior to reporting test results.

    EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Must hold—

    • California Medical License
      OR
    • California Clinical Chemist Laboratory Director license
      OR
    • California Clinical Laboratory Bioanalyst license
    • OR
    • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist license
    • OR
    • California Chemist Scientist license=

    AND

    Meet ONE of the following technical consultant requirements—

    (1)

    (i) Be a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State in which the laboratory is located; and

    (ii) Be certified in anatomic or clinical pathology, or both, by the American Board of Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology; or

    (2)

    (i) Be a doctor of medicine, doctor of osteopathy, or doctor of podiatric medicine licensed to practice medicine, osteopathy, or podiatry in the State in which the laboratory is located; and

    (ii) Have at least 1 year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in nonwaived testing, in the designated specialty or subspecialty areas of service for which the technical consultant is responsible (for example, physicians certified either in hematology or hematology and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine are qualified to serve as the technical consultant in hematology); or

    (3)

    (i)(A) Hold an earned doctoral or master’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution; or

    (B) Meet either requirements in § 493.1405(b)(3)(i)(B) or (b)(4)(i)(B) or (C); and

    (ii) Have at least 1 year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in nonwaived testing, in the designated specialty or subspecialty areas of service for which the technical consultant is responsible; or

    (4)

    (i)(A) Have earned a bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution; or

    (B) Meet § 493.1405(b)(5)(i)(B); and

    (ii) Have at least 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in nonwaived testing, in the designated specialty or subspecialty areas of service for which the technical consultant is responsible;
