As part of the strategic communications team, the Communications Editor ensures alignment of internal communication with the mission, vision, and goals of the organization. Coordinates, develops, and manages divisional communications that deliver a consistent message and marries well with overall organizational messaging. Provide internal communications counsel to and partners with members of the senior leadership team to facilitate organizational effectiveness, especially Human Resources, Student Affairs, IMT, Business Office, and Legal, and also works in a cross-functional capacity among a variety of teams, including the Strategic Communications Working Group.
The Communications Editor provides editorial review and copy editing for the university’s undergraduate and graduate catalogs, online program content, and key projects as identified by the Executive Director for Strategic Communication. This person will:
- Serve as the lead editor for Strategic Communication and Engagement projects.
- Serve as primary editor on catalog and curriculum content.
- Serve as primary liaison between the Division of Strategic Communication and Engagement and Office of Curricular Support.
As a member of the SCE team, the Communications Editor works closely with the Office of Curricular Support. This individual will ensure curriculum and catalog content aligns with the University Style Guide and university master brand, and be responsible for aligning program content on university website (apu.edu). This includes managing content within the university’s online curriculum and catalog systems, meeting monthly with the Office of Curricular Support staff, and tracking program and curriculum updates for the SCE team. This individual will provide editorial support to SCE projects, including print and web projects as assigned, being the lead copy editor for the website’s more than 8,800 pages of marketing, academic, and dynamic content.
Required Education
- B.A. in English, Journalism, Communication, or related field
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Five-to-seven years of professional writing/editing experience, preferably in higher education setting
PRIMARY DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Serve as the primary editor for curriculum content, including new programs and course descriptions, processed by the Office of Curricular Support. This includes reviewing, editing, and proofreading content for grammar and punctuation usage, style, tone, and quality adhering to university standards.
- Serve as the primary editor for all catalog content updates to ensure quality, style, tone, and organization adhere to university standards.
- Communicate with offices and departments on campus regarding curriculum updates and to verify accuracy of content.
- Alongside the OCS team, manage content within the CourseLeaf curriculum and catalog systems, including organizing page content and other administrative functions within the tool.
- Collaborate with the SCE editorial team on updating program content on apu.edu to align with curriculum updates to ensure accuracy.
- Track new programs and key curriculum changes, provide regular updates to the SCE editorial team, and assist with review of new program sites and brochures to ensure alignment.
- Develop relationships with internally focused divisions to provide editorial direction and oversight to their communications, including Human Resources, Student Affairs, IMT, Business Office, and Legal.
- Provide editorial support on key SCE projects, such as APU Life, commencement programs, and other projects as identified by the ED for Strategic Communication.
- Support the editorial and web team with implementing website updates as available.
- Proofread and edit all work to maintain content accuracy, consistent tone, and style.
- Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.
- Performs other duties as required by the supervisor.

COMPENSATION
- Grade 11: $28.53-$37.09/hourly
- Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
