The Summer Math Teacher is directly responsible to the Academic Advisor and is a part-time, temporary employee. The Summer Math Teacher is paid a flat fee of $2,100. Teachers are assigned four classes during the June 1- July 2 session. Classes are 50 minutes long and student numbers range from 10 to 15 per class. Teachers are selected, hired, trained, supervised and evaluated by the Academic Advisor. Teachers play key roles in the Upward Bound (UB) program, and their competency, reliability and integrity are essential to the success of UB.
Primary responsibilities of the Summer Math Teacher is to teach approx. 20 hours of up to four types of math including Algebra, Geometry and Advanced Math during the summer component; prepare curriculum; develop instruction in accordance with overall design of UB program objectives; prepare course syllabus, pre and post tests; prepare Progress Reports on each student’s progress at the end of the summer session; attend weekly faculty meetings during the summer program; maintain accurate reports of student attendance and academic performance of course requirements; arrive at all planned classes promptly, prepared, and appropriately dressed; establish rapport with students assigned to classes; report to, and keep UB Academic Advisor advised of student needs; accurately complete and turn in all required paperwork in a timely manner; attend Awards Banquet and honor student academic performance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS degree in math. Experience with and knowledge of high school students. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to accurately complete and maintain academic records. Ability to develop and provide unique and creative classroom instruction. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and UB staff. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
MA/MS in math. Teaching Certification. Prior experience with an Upward Bound or Talent Search program. Prior experience with disadvantaged youth. Preference is given to those who have succeeded in overcoming a disadvantaged background similar to program participants.
SALARY RANGE:
Commensurate with experience.
