The Health, Safety and Security (HSS) Manager is an integral part of the Global Programs Health, Safety, and Security team, which supports international travel by the BU community through constant monitoring and analysis of international security and risk conditions, training development and delivery; incident response and crisis management. The HSS Manager reports to the Managing Director, Global Partnerships and Support, but works closely with the Associate Director of Health, Safety and Security and other team members in Global Programs.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
HSS Travel Risk Management System Administration (20%)
- Manages the Travel Risk Management System, which includes, but is not limited to:
- Oversight of global travel registration, including system uploads, distribution of information to the community, and registration support for travelers
- Managing access, data, reports, analysis, alerts and related processes for the seamless operation of the system
- Maintaining and working to improve the tool for both end-user ease of use and reporting needs; producing regular and ad-hoc reports to track University travelers;
- Acting as primary contact and liaison with System vendor for service issues, upgrades, etc.
- Maintains data on and prepares reports of incidents abroad; in partnership with Data Analyst and Associate Director, HSS, identifies and monitors trends in incidents affecting BU travelers.
- Prepares reports and briefings as needed.
HSS Risk Assessment and Monitoring (30%)
- Actively and continuously monitors world events and international health, safety and security conditions with the potential to impact Boston University activities abroad in collaboration with the Associate Director, HSS
- Contributes to review of academic unit program proposals through analysis and assessment of health, safety and security risks and mitigation plans for proposed programs to inform program approval
- Works directly with student organizations and other units to plan and execute safe international activities
- Travels periodically to conduct Study Abroad health and safety site assessments
- With the Associate Director of HSS, provides administrative support to the Global Travel Risk Assessment Committee (GTRAC).
Training and Outreach (30%)
- Assists in the development, implementation and communication of Health and Safety policies/procedures for the University community. Responds to questions related to policies and procedures from all levels throughout the organization.
- Develops training and media for disseminating and tracking Health, Safety and Security tools and information to students, faculty and staff
- Delivers health, safety and security training to students, faculty and staff in-person and in digital format
- Participates in outreach to the BU community to pro-actively provide pre-travel support
- Participates in professional organizations, including occasional travel to conferences and seminars.
Incident Response and Crisis Management (20%)
- Staffs an emergency phone on a rotating basis with other HSS Team members for emergencies involving BU travelers abroad; emergencies can and often occur outside of regular business hours.
- Serves on the Safety Management Team and acts as incident commander or other roles as assigned or needed in emergency situations.
- Works with the Associate Director and the Safety Management Team to ensure that Boston University’s response to overseas emergencies are carried out appropriately and efficiently, and that after-action meetings and reports are completed in a timely manner.
Required Skills

- BA/BS required, Graduate degree preferred
- 5 years of professional experience in international education, international risk management, or student life
- Experience working directly with undergraduates preferred
- Counseling training desirable
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products or other analytical tools and databases, including Excel, Sharepoint, OneNote and Teams
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong analytical, problem solving and project management skills
- Proactive and results-oriented
- Willingness to travel on short notice if necessary.
