  • Responsibilities

    Xavier University seeks applicants to fill the librarian position of Head of Collections. Reporting to the Library Director, the successful candidate for this full-time, exempt position leads the Library’s collection development and management program including administration of a $1m acquisitions budget. The successful candidate guides the formulation, implementation and evaluation of collection development and management strategies for print and electronic resources, directs and analyzes collections assessment initiatives, maintains vendor relations and participates in the provision of effective public service including reference, instruction, and liaison responsibilities.

    Responsibilities includes but not limited to:

    • Administer the library collection development and management program including supervision of the Electronic Resources and Acquisitions Librarian.
    • Allocate and monitor overall library materials budget and provide budget projections.
    • Direct and analyze collections assessment initiatives to inform strategic planning and contribute to accreditation efforts.
    • Coordinate the gathering of collection statistics and budget information for academic department accreditation, self-study/program reviews, and the implementation of new academic programs.
    • Administer orders and renewals; approve firm orders, renew subscriptions in all formats, and review new journal requests from faculty.
    • Communicate with academic departments about materials budget impacts including potential cancelations and new subscriptions/orders.
    • Evaluate and respond to proposals for consortial purchases of electronic resources.
    • Oversee the maintenance of database usage statistics files, and coordinate database trials.
    • Lead vendor negotiations and review license/contracts terms.
    • Review and update the Collection Development Policy as needed.
    • Provide assessments of collection space, project growth for specific collections, oversee collection weeding and collection updating including Annex holdings and collaborate on stacks maintenance.
    • Supervise student employees in collections activities as needed.
    • Serve as liaison to multiple academic departments in support of information literacy and use of library resources and services.
    • Participate in the library’s provision of effective public service including reference, instruction, and liaison responsibilities to academic departments.

    Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution
    • Minimum of three years’ experience as a professional librarian in an academic library
    • Minimum of three years’ experience with primary responsibility for managing library collections in all formats
    • Minimum of one year supervisory experience of library staff
    • Ability to work collaboratively and independently with strong attention to detail and follow through
    • Advanced communication and analytical skills
    • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and meet established deadlines
    • Experience teaching information literacy sessions

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Familiarity with ExLibris Alma/Primo LSP environment
    • Knowledge of Open Access and Open Educational Resources
    • Understanding of consortial landscape for shared content
    • Knowledge of Copyright and Fair Use provisions
