    Job Description

    The School of Professional Studies M.S. in Technology Management program is seeking industry professionals to design and teach the fall 2025 course Philosophy of Technology. These individuals will serve as part-time Lecturers.

    This course examines the philosophical aspects of technology and its impact on human life, society, and culture. Students will explore key topics like technological determinism, ethics, and how technology shapes human identity, power, and social structures.The course also looks at emerging technologies such as AI, LLMs, automation, and nanotechnology, and their influence on the future. Special attention will be given to issues of equity and bias, examining how technology can both challenge and reinforce social inequalities.Through readings and discussions, students will critically reflect on the ethical and philosophical challenges technology presents.

    _ Responsibilities_

    • Lead in-person class lectures, instructional activities, and classroom discussion
    • Evaluate student work and grade assignments
    • Monitor student concerns and inquiries and be the first point of contact for student questions
    • Hold weekly office hours
    • Part‐time Lecturers who are new to SPS must complete Canvas training (online learning management system)

    Qualifications

    Columbia University SPS operates under a scholar-practitioner faculty model, which enables students to learn from faculty that have outstanding academic training as well as a record of accomplishment as practitioners in an applied industry setting.

    ** Requirements**

    • A graduate degree from an accredited institution
    • 10+ years of professional experience
    • University teaching experience preferred

    ** Preferred Qualifications**

    • Ph.D. in Philosophy, Technology Studies, or a related field with a focus on the philosophy of technology or ethics.
    • Experience working with technology, such as consulting, working in industry, or participating in technology policy-making.
    • Thought leadership as reflected by blogging/writing and public speaking
    • Fluency with contemporary ethical debates related to technology

    Additional Information

    Salary : $15,450 per semester-length course teaching. $5,000 for two semester course development.
