    The Military and Veterans Coach provides holistic support including spiritual, academic, and career coaching and care enabling students primarily in the military-connected student population to experience success, sense of belonging, and thriving outcomes. The Military and Veterans Coach is expected to demonstrate a strong Christian faith, a passion to serve students well, and a collaborative mindset that fosters community and team.

    Required Education

    • Master's degree in leadership, counseling, psychology, or a related field is required.

    Required Experience

    • Five years or more experience in a client-based, service-oriented environment.
    • Demonstrated ability to use technology to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and customer service.
    • Academic advising/counseling experience within a higher education setting.
    • Some experience in military service or working with veterans and active duty military.

    Primary Duties/Essential Functions

    • Provide academic, career, and personal coaching (face to face and/or online) helping students primarily in the military and veterans population to thrive and accomplish holistic goals and outcomes.
    • Keep abreast of changing degree, certificate, transfer, and military-connected student information in order to advise students about the most current requirements and train other counselors.
    • Lead group presentations including student-interest workshops and seminars, orientations, group advising, and other matriculation functions.
    • Participate in college success and career/life planning sessions to assist military-connected students with applicable transitions.
    • Coordinate student success initiatives in partnership with key university offices to bolster military-connected engagement, resourcing, and programming.
    • Serve as liaison for military-connected student-related issues to academic and career education departments, student services, and instructional faculty.
    • Participate in program review and development and assessment of service area outcomes.
    • Participate in ongoing professional development and social engagement activities for military and veteran students.
    • Facilitate programming and resourcing for military and veteran students at Azusa and regional campuses.
    • Serve on the Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation (CARE) Advisory Team, APU CARES team, and other applicable committees with a military and veteran.

    Skills

    • Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Exceptional oral, written, analytical, interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
    • Must be able to keep information confidential.
    • Must demonstrate exceptional multicultural competence.
    • Must be well-organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks concurrently.
    • Ability to focus on detail. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks/deadlines.
    • Self-starter with strong management/organizational skills.

    Mental Demands

    • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion with the ability to work under pressure with many distractions and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to interface in a friendly, caring, effective manner with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with a team.
    • Agree with the purpose and goals of Azusa Pacific University in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students.
    • It is imperative that the Veteran Coach demonstrates a desire to learn about the varying needs of diverse populations, and can appropriately engage and serve all students.

    Physical Demands

    • Requires repetitive motion and sitting at a computer keyboard.
    • Hearing and speaking on the telephone.
    • Able to conduct business at other offices on campus.
    • Ability to lift, bend, grasp, reach and lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally.

    Visual Demands

    • Reading, writing notes, and working with records systems on a computer monitor.

    Environment

    • Pleasant office setting, comfortable temperature.

    Technologies

    • Proficient in Google Apps, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
    • Familiarity with PeopleSoft preferred.

    Compensation

    • Grade 12: $30.67 to $35.27 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.

    1. Ability to follow oral instruction, read and write

    2. Must be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.

    3. Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic technique in relation to the procedure and the operating field.

    4. Must possess extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

    5. Must be detail oriented and have the ability to multitask.

    6. Demonstrates the ability to provide preoperative safety measures.

    7. Demonstrates the ability to provide intraoperative skills such as visualization, trocar insertion, hemostasis, issue handling, placement and securing the wound drains and closure of body planes.

    8. Must have the ability to work independently or co-dependently with the surgeon.
