    POSITION SUMMARY: The Carpenter/Maintenance Tech is responsible for performing skilled carpentry work to build, repair, rebuild, remodel, and maintain campus building, facilities, and equipment in support of assigned projects.

    The Carpenter/Maintenance Tech II reports to the Assistant Director of Facilities and works closely with other members of the Facilities team.

    • Demonstrates an attitude and behavior that reflects the values and mission of the department and University.
    • Serves as a member of the dedicated Facilities Project Team dedicated to supporting projects and deferred maintenance.
    • Performs skilled carpentry work in support of assigned projects and deferred maintenance orders. Examples of work may include:
      • Remodels and repairs cabinets, counters, shelves, tables and miscellaneous furniture;
      • Replaces and repairs door closures and locks
      • Alters and repairs a variety of building structures such as walls, partitions, doorways, window frames, stairways and roofs
      • Installs window glass and screens; applies wall and floor covering materials; installs ceramic and other types of tile
      • Refinishes furniture and paints and stains building interiors and exteriors
      • May occasionally make routine electrical, plumbing and mechanical repairs of building equipment
    • Applies safety precaution pertaining to: safety regulations and procedures; chemical safety, hazard communication program; personal protective equipment; lifting procedures, back injury prevention; flammable storage, housekeeping; and fire extinguisher training.
    • Participates in trainings, certifications, and other professional development and compliance activities as assigned.
    • Performs other duties as assigned which could include associated Facilities department maintenance work as requested, including, but not limited to: snow removal, event set-up and clean-up, truck loading and unloading, etc.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.
    • Ability to bend, twist, and reach to load or unload materials and equipment.
    • Ability to read blue prints or drawings to measure.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and distinctly in person and by two-way radio.
    • Ability to understand conversation in a noisy environment and/or communicate at a moderate distance.
    • Ability to determine location of sounds and discriminate among various power tools and equipment sounds.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Frequent work on ladders and/or scaffolding.
    • Possibility of working in confined spaces when working with ceiling structures.
    • Frequent work near moving machinery and power tools.
    • Exposed to pronounced strain or vibration when using power tools.
    • Exposed to intermittent or continued loud and insistent noises caused by power equipment.
    • Exposed to large amounts of dust in shops and on site.
    • Possible exposure to chemical irritants such as contact cement, adhesives, and cleaning solutions.
    • Subject to working near electrical equipment.

    The maximum hourly rate anticipated for this position is $17 hourly.

    Required Skills

    • Knowledge of tools and methods of the trade; applicable local building codes.
    • Skilled in planning and completing carpentry projects.
    • Knowledge of standard carpentry materials and supplies.
    • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints; prepare rough sketches of work and estimates of material and labor; select proper materials to be used; work cooperatively with others; skillfully use the proper tools.
    • Knowledge of and skill in operating, adjusting, and maintaining power operated carpentry tools and equipment on site and in a shop setting.
    • Knowledge and skill in use of manually operated carpentry tools and equipment.
    • Skill in the repair of damaged furniture, cabinets, walls, ceilings, doors, locks, etc.

    Required Experience

    EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

    • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
    • A minimum of two (2) years of skilled carpentry experience is required; or two (2) years of experience performing duties including skilled carpentry work; or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities and is required. 
    • A suitable combination of education, training, and /or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the required duties is required.

      

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Valid Oklahoma State Driver's License is required.  Selected candidate must meet the requirements of the university driving program to operate university vehicles.  
    • The selected candidate will complete a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
