    Upward Bound Math Science at Boston University is a federally funded TRIO program, whose purpose is to prepare 50 low-income and first-generation college bound students for success in higher education. The goal of Upward Bound Math Science is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in those subjects. Students enter the program in either grade 9 or 10 and continue in the program through high school graduation. Program services include an academically rigorous six-week summer residential program, as well as afternoon classes and tutoring during the school year. Applicants must attend one of five target high schools: Boston Green Academy, Josiah Quincy Upper School, Chelsea High and Charlestown High School; or who attend a public school and live in one of four target neighborhoods: Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan and Roxbury.

    The Boston University Upward Bound Math Science Program Manager has both management and direct service responsibilities including the development of the program's curriculum and STEM related activities; such as Summer Science Wednesdays and High School Vacation Week Laboratories; working with the Upward Bound program manager to hire, train, and supervise program teachers; providing college application, financial aid application and academic advising and support services to participants; arranging college visits; conferring with program teachers and teachers at target high schools regarding student achievement; management of participant academic assessments; connect across departments and units at BU and the community through website content creation and social media; and supporting project director in the preparation of project reports, participant recruitment, and liaising with parents of project participants and staff at target schools.     Required Skills

    • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferable with education or coursework in the fields of science, math or engineering.
    • Secondary school certification or instructional experience preferable.
    • 3-5 years of experience working with first-generation college potential or low-income populations in an educational setting.
    • 2-3 years of staff supervision, program evaluation, and curriculum development. Ability to communicate students' needs in a variety of subject areas to program staff, University faculty and graduate students, high school teachers and counselors and administrators.
    • Excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated experience and interest in working with underserved and disadvantaged youth.
    • Although not required, preference will be given to applicants who speak multiple languages.
