    The Medical Assistant will work on Project Youth Wellness Grant which aims to support service expansion and capacity building of behavioral health personnel in evidence-based practices serving youth and young adults in under-resourced Southeast Los Angeles County. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for providing HIV/STI testing under the direction of the healthcare staff and care coordination with Prevention Navigator and Bienestar agency staff for high-risk youth in need of HIV, STI, and Hepatitis treatment services. The Medical Assistant will work with the Prevention Navigator to ensure the implementation of necessary prevention and care coordination services with Maryvale and Bienestar for any at-risk youth needing additional SUD and HIV/STI-related treatment services including harm reduction over the 5-year grant. The ideal candidate is resourceful, organized, detail-oriented, and sensitive to confidential information. This position reports to the Project Director/Principal Investigator. This is a grant-funded position and is contingent upon continued grant funding. When not directly working on grant-related projects, the Medical Assistant will assist the Student Health Center.

    Required Education

    • High School Diploma/GED Required
    • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant training program in a recognized institution in accordance with standards established by the Medical Board of California
    • Successful completion of LA County’s Division of HIV and STD Programs’ HIV Test Counselor Certification within the first 90 days of hire.

    Required Experience

    • Provider-level basic life support (BLS) from AHA approved program.
    • Minimum of 6 months of experience as a Medical Assistant or equivalent.
    • Community Clinic experience preferred
    • Experience with EMR preferred

    Primary Duties/Essential Functions

    • Assist the medical provider in providing high-quality, efficient, and service-oriented patient care.
    • Under the direction of a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Lead, assist with direct patient care.
    • If applicable, responsible for driving the mobile medical unit, minor maintenance checks on the mobile medical unit, and cleaning the unit.
    • Assists with patient registration, referrals, scheduling, and exam room turnover.
    • Upholds all HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) and other regulatory compliance and safety requirements.
    • Stays up to date on all credentialing requirements.
    • In collaboration with the HIV prevention team, work to identify individuals at risk of contracting HIV and/or HIV-positive individuals and link them to appropriate prevention and treatment services.
    • Collect and document patient risk factors, including complete sexual history.
    • Accurately record and report HIV prevention and treatment data.
    • Participate in HIV Prevention Team and Grant-related meetings.
    • Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.
    • Perform other duties related to the position as required by the supervisor.

    Skills

    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing, with the project team, consultants, and other project stakeholders.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the project team, site staff and liaisons, and other project stakeholders.
    • Organizational skills for assisting with project material (meeting agendas, minutes).
    • Skill in conducting literature reviews and writing up reports.
    • Skill in data entry and analysis, including developing tables and figures.
    • Skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Apps for presentations, reports, and conferences.
    • Willingness to work occasional evening hours.
    • Ability to manage details and follow through.
    • Must be collaborative and an effective team member and team builder.
    • Obtain vital signs on patients.
    • Perform phlebotomy (if unable to currently do this, they will need to learn).
    • Administer vaccinations.

    Technologies

    • Proficient in Google Apps (e.g., Google Drive), Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva, and Adobe.

    Compensation

    • Grade 7: $19.49 to $22.41 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
