The Department of Environmental Health at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) has a long history and national reputation of interdisciplinary research to address the health effects of environmental exposures. Our work addresses the health effects of exposures to complex mixtures of chemicals, including chemicals contained in consumer products as well as contaminants of water, food, and soil such as lead or mercury. We evaluate the health effects of air pollution and a changing climate, including through the school-wide Center for Climate and Health at BUSPH, which is led by environmental health faculty. We are also interested in the adverse effects of non-chemical hazards such as noise, heat, and social stressors, and how different kinds of chemical and non-chemical exposures accumulate or interact to harm health. Vulnerable populations such as children and people living in poverty in the US and internationally are of special interest to us.

We are currently inviting applications for a research assistant position with Dr. Jonathan Buonocore and Dr. M. Patricia Fabian in the Department of Environmental Health. This research assistant will work in data curating, data management, and data analysis related to energy
infrastructure, air pollution emissions from power plants and other sources, renewable energy, and environmental justice geospatial data related to a variety of new projects in energy and health.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Data collection and curation – construct pipelines and processes to download, curate, clean and manage energy and health data sources.
    • Data analysis – build data analysis pipelines and conduct data analysis to feed into grant proposals and into research outputs, including contributions to peer-reviewed manuscripts, presentations, grant reports, and other outputs for stakeholders.
    • Data visualization and mapping - build pipelines to analyze, visualize, and map data. Data visualizations will be used in grant proposals and other research outputs.
    • Writing summaries of findings of data analysis - write summaries of research findings from analysis, visualization, and mapping exercises. These will be used in research outputs for a variety of audiences including grant-makers, researchers, and other stakeholders.
