A Histotechnician/Research Specialist position is open at the School of Medicine in a cutting-edge, high-visibility biomedical research laboratory focusing on Alzheimers Disease and Traumatic Brain Injury, CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). Involvement in a NIH-funded national consortium that focuses on Alzheimer Disease Biology. Main duties include tissue collection and processing, embedding, sectioning (paraffin and cryosectioning), and immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence staining of rodent and human tissues. Some cross-campus travel will be required.
This position requires independent decision-making and taking action to solve moderately complex problems as well as the ability to recognize factors that affect procedures and results.
The position takes the lead on the histotechnology component of the research. Develops, integrates, and implements advanced techniques related to overarching research goals. Develops and optimizes standard operating protocols and ensures regulatory compliance. In addition to histotechnological works, oversees tissue banking across all projects. Maintains operational performance of complicated instruments. Assists with development of novel bioanalytical techniques. Initiates relationships between research components at BU and other collaborating institutions locally and nationally. The work requires comprehensive knowledge related to the field and the individual will ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
No true supervisory responsibilities but oversees training and supervision of all histopathology and microscopic image acquisition and pathology in the lab.
Required Skills
The applicant should have a bachelors degree with 3-5 years experience (human, rodent) preferred. ASCP certification preferred. Histotech certification is preferred but not required. The applicant should have excellent oral and written English communication skills including standard operating protocol development. The applicant must demonstrate professionalism and must be able to collaborate with researchers and other personnel as a part of research team.
