    Admissions Counselor (Part-Time) San Diego Humane Society 25 reviews - San Diego, CA 92110 $14.56 an hour - Part-time San Diego Humane Society is hiring a Part-Time Regular Admissions Counselors for our San Diego Campus! SUMMARY: Conduct interviews with people relinquishing animals and obtain detailed information about animals being relinquished. Complete intake procedures for all animals being admitted to SDHS. Provide daily care and enrichment for shelter animals. Provide general information to the public. Perform euthanasia procedures, and conduct daily animal husbandry routines as needed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following, but are not limited to: * Assist members of the general public in the admittance of their pet through proper interviewing techniques and completion of all necessary paperwork. Obtain accurate information regarding animal temperament, living habits and training, medical conditions, behavior, age, breed and sex from relinquisher. * Complete daily cleaning routine, maintaining assigned area in a clean, organized and attractive manner, as scheduled.

    • Evaluate and assist with the behavior assessment of new canine arrivals as required. * Perform minor medical tasks such as performing gross physical examinations, administer subQ vaccinations and oral general de-wormer, and perform blood draws at time of admittance. Scan for microchip verification or presence. * Remain in the designated area and/or be accessible at all times to assist staff, the public, and any incoming animals. * Assist, as scheduled, at special and mobile offsite events. * Assist in animal transports between all facilities, including driving to Oceanside campus as assigned. * Promote positive relationships with the general public, volunteers and staff while promoting the societys programs, policies and philosophies. * Perform euthanasia in accordance with AVMA guidelines. (Must be certified; training towards certification will be provided.) Once certified, participate in euthanasia procedures of in-house animals, for owner relinquished animals, and for owner-present euthanasia procedures. * Monitor playgroups in age, temperament and sex-appropriate groups. * Work directly with the Animal Admissions Supervisor, Animal Services Manager, Animal Care Supervisor, and other staff members to assure the highest of standards in day-to-day shelter operations. * Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management and the public at all times. * Conduct data entry of animal and relinquisher information, utilizing the Shelter Buddy software. * Provide behavior counseling to general public and potential adopters, through either the behavior help line or introductions with resident pets and family members. * Attend in-service training, staff and volunteer meetings as needed for position or as requested by supervisor or manager. * Assist with family pet introductions and adoptions when requested to do so by a supervisor or manager. * Regularly and predictably attend work in-person as scheduled. * Wear appropriate, clean uniform, footwear and name tag at all times during business hours. SALARY: This position starts at a rate of $14.56 per hour and salary will be commensurate with experience. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent. Must complete and pass required training and skills demonstration tests provided by the society within established timeframe. Must become SDHS certified to perform owner requested, owner present, and internal euthanasia. Must have minimum of two-years of paid experience working with animals in a kennel, shelter or veterinary hospital. Advanced training and/or instruction in field of customer service preferred. Good working knowledge of animal breeds, nutrition, general care and behavior related information required. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be 21 years old, have a valid CA Drivers License and good driving record. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 50 pounds for situations of restraining or moving animals and lifting food and animal care supplies, repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds for Euthanasia procedures and to handle animals appropriately for aftercare. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Will work primarily on site at animal care facility, with the occasion for off-site special and mobile events. Travel to North campus in Oceanside required as scheduled.
