    Shenandoah University is accepting applications for a Director of Counseling Services. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.

    The position provides individual and group counseling to Shenandoah University students, outreach and consultation services and treatment in the following areas: crisis intervention, brief therapy, mental health concerns, relational issues, sexual assault, and academic challenges. The Director of Counseling Services reports to the Executive Director of the Wilkins Wellness Center. The Director of Counseling Services will have direct oversight for implementing policies, procedures, and clinical delivery systems. The Director of Counseling Services serves as personnel manager for the counseling staff including: recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation and professional development. The Director of Counseling Services represents the department on campus committees. 

    RESPONSIBILITIES: 

    • Provides leadership and oversight to the administration, implementation, and ongoing assessment of counseling services and serves in senior leadership capacities.
    • Provides individual and group counseling for students with personal or educational concerns.
    • Conducts case management activities, including case notes, screening, and intake documentation, client treatment planning, and outside-of-session client contact. 
    • Reports monthly statistics and benchmarks of clinical and outreach services, updates departmental goals, and provides a written summary of the Counseling Center’s annual activities each semester.
    • Implements overall clinical services program for mental health and provides oversight for clinical operations ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.
    • Supervises counseling staff (residents, counselors, interns, etc.) in their clinical responsibilities and duties. 
    • Maintains responsibilities for office practices to adhere to best clinical practices, applicable state laws and guidelines, local health and safety laws and regulations, risk management practices, and that professional codes of ethics are followed by staff. 
    • Provides oversight and leadership for accreditation and compliance standards. 
    • Develops crisis procedures, policies and partnerships with outside agencies for student referrals and crisis care. 
    • Develops and evaluates psycho-educational programs for various student groups and community members as well as coordinates outreach activities.
    • Plans and implements training seminars and workshops to address preventative and developmental needs with mental health and wellness.
    • Provides assistance to the Disability Learning Resource Center to review documentation for reasonable accommodations for students to provide coaching or other specified educational services as needed.
    • Serves on divisional, institutional and community-wide committees.
    • Consults with faculty, staff, and other personnel about the development, career and mental health needs of students and works cooperatively with them for the benefit of students and the institution. 
    • Makes referrals to community resources.
    • Actively engages in student affairs and college health professional activities and organizations such as NASPA and ACHA, etc. 
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Skills

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Minimum of 5 years post-licensure working in a community or preferably college counseling setting. 
    • Master’s Degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, professional counseling or closely related discipline. 
    • Licensed in Virginia as a psychologist or Professional Counselor (or ability to obtain in first 60 days of employment)
    • Approved by Virginia Board of Counseling to serve as a clinical supervisor (or ability to obtain in first 60 days of employment)
    • Prior experience providing clinical supervision to interns, graduate students, residents and/or other clinical staff.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Earned doctorate degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, professional counseling or closely related discipline. 
    • Experience working with residential populations.
    • Experience working in college counseling in a clinical supervising setting. 
    • Minimum of three years of administrative experience including supervisory activities, budget management, and strategic planning responsibilities.
    • Experience using Titanium or other counseling services software.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    Knowledge of principles of student development and psychological theories, and knowledge of clinical service delivery systems in college/university counseling centers; knowledge of professional ethical guidelines associated with counseling practice; knowledge of various laws (FERPA,HIPPA, etc.) that impact counseling services provision in the university counseling centers.
