Summary: This position assists a certificated teacher with providing specially designed instructional and non-instructional activities for students with disabilities. Additional Information: Special Education TLC: A Therapeutic Learning Center classroom provides intensive behavioral and social emotional services to special education students requiring this high level of support and intervention. Responsibilities: 1. Tutors students individually or in small groups in assigned learning activity; provides feedback and encouragement; provides assistance as necessary to students with sensory or physical disabilities; may use some sign language. 2. May train students in self-care activities or carry out activities such as feeding, dressing, toileting and diapering; may accompany students as needed throughout school premises; may assist students with limited mobility. 3. Supervises students in the assigned program during recess or lunch periods; may assist these students in loading or unloading buses. 4. Documents student progress; maintains communication with classroom teacher and other necessary staff; maintains student records. 5. Uses special teaching techniques, computer software, and adaptive equipment to meet the needs of students with particular disabilities, as assigned. 6. May clean dishes and utensils following snack periods; may prepare and serve lunches and snacks. 7. Models appropriate behavior for students; demonstrates and discusses behavior; assists in classroom management; observes and records student progress and maintains records for teacher; follows established behavior plans. 8. Assists teacher in planning and adapting materials and activities as directed; arranges classroom furniture and materials for activities; prepares and presents lessons or center activities with one or a small group of students as assigned by the teacher; implements lessons assigned by specialists such as Speech/Language Pathologists. 9. Participates in department staff meetings; provides information regarding students. 10. Assists in planning special activities for students; accompanies students on field trips and yearly camp activity. 11. May coordinate computer activities for students; maintains and troubleshoots equipment; schedules students to use equipment; maintains software. OTHER JOB DUTIES 1. Provides general classroom assistance; duplicates materials and completes necessary paperwork; assists in assessing students and records scores. 2. May work in several classrooms with different teachers; supervises students in classroom during brief teacher breaks. 3. May perform cleansing intermittent catheterizations after receiving required training. 4. Performs related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Associates degree or 72 credit hours of post secondary education or passing state test to demonstrate knowledge and ability to assist in instructing students; one year of experience in working with special needs individuals in a setting similar to the assigned setting; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work and that meets federal and state requirements. Knowledge Skills and Abilities Knowledge of assigned subject areas. Knowledge of assigned disabilities. Excellent interpersonal skills required for dealing with students with disabilities. Basic sign language skills (for certain positions). Skill in obtaining, clarifying, and exchanging information. Ability to lift and position students. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate activities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multicultural, diverse socio-economic setting. Ability to feed, diaper, and provide toileting assistance to students. Required Licenses/Special Requirements Required to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification. May be required to complete cleansing intermittent catheterization (CIC) training. Working Conditions Required to move students or materials; exposed to body fluids and infectious disease; may be exposed to high noise levels; required to deal with distraught and/or potentially violent people.
