ROLE of the POSITION Support the day-to-day operation of the School of Dental Medicine Clinical Dental Teams by serving as a Dental Assistant. Under the direction of licensed dentists assigned to the Dental Teams this position using four-handed dentistry assisting techniques assist student doctors and faculty dentist in the completion of various dental procedures. Applies sterile techniques and infectious control and exposure procedures when preparing for, during and upon completion of each dental treatment. Assist student doctors and faculty dentists in the general or specialized treatment of patients in both routine and emergency procedures in areas of diagnostic, preventive, restorative, periodontal, endodontic, oral surgery and prosthodontic dental care. The following duties must be performed at an advanced level; expose radiographs, retract patient's cheek, tongue or other tissue during a dental procedure; remove the debris that normally accumulates during or after a cleaning or procedure by the dentist using water, compressed air or suction. Assist student doctors in the placement or removal of a rubber dam and the accessories used for its placement. The removal of sutures; must be able to remove excess cement from cemented restorations and orthodontic appliances without the use of a rotary cutting instrument; administer a topical anesthestic in any form except aerosol; able to take various types of impressions. Assist student doctors in the fabrication and placement of temporary crowns and bridges, the retraction of gingival tissue; removal of soft plaque and stain from exposed tooth surfaces, utilizing an appropriate rotary instrument with rubber cup or brush and a suitable polishing agent, the administering of a topical fluoride and the application of pit and fisure sealant to the dentition for the prevention of decay, all of which must be checked and approved by the licensed faculty dentist assigned to the Dental Team before dismissal of patient. Works Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from high school or equivalent education, successful completion of a recognized one-year dental assistant training program, and one year of experience working with the public collecting and recording information and/or explaining and clarifying basic information; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of clinical experience in a dental practice using four-handed techniques in a wide range of procedures, collecting and recording patient's medical information, exposing, processing, mounting and labeling radiographs, and applying dental sterile techniques and infectious control and exposure procedures; OR one year of experience as a Dental Assistant I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. SALARY Grade 25 Step 1, salary $32,990.40. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade.
