ROLE of the POSITION The University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine (SODM) Pediatrics is seeking a Dental Assistant 2. The primary purpose of this position is to assist pediatric dental postgraduate students and pediatric dental faculty members in the treatment of pediatric dental patients; however, individuals applying for this position must also be able to assist in all other areas of dental treatment to include front office responsibilities, restorative, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery and prosthodontics. When requested, this position will provide assistance to pediatric dental postgraduate students, dental students and faculty members within the UNLV, School of Dental Medicine's, Advanced Education Programs in pediatric dentistry and other residencies, pre-doctoral clinics, faculty practice and outreach clinics. Candidates must possess the following; basic knowledge of front office duties, including excellent communication skills; knowledge of proper diagnostic and preventive dentistry protocols; ability to perform four-handed dentistry, assisting techniques; ability to assist dental postgraduate students, residents and dental students, in learning these techniques; possess the immediate, current, dental knowledge needed to become proficient in the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen and conscious sedation procedures, during the provision of pediatric oral health care; familiarity with proper dental supply disciplines; use and store dental materials in accordance with manufacturer's directions; ensure all clinical areas are in compliance with State, Federal and OSHA guidelines as they pertain to infection control and the sterilization of dental instruments; possess basic knowledge of dental software operating systems. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8AM-5PM but will require an occasional alternate day shift. QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from high school or equivalent education, successful completion of a recognized one-year dental assistant training program, and one year of experience working with the public collecting and recording information and/or explaining and clarifying basic information; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of clinical experience in a dental practice using four-handed techniques in a wide range of procedures, collecting and recording patient's medical information, exposing, processing, mounting and labeling radiographs, and applying dental sterile techniques and infectious control and exposure procedures; OR one year of experience as a Dental Assistant 1 in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. * Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, some positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Pediatric Dental Office front/back chairside experience preferred. SALARY Grade 25 Step 1, salary $32,990.40. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
