    Summer Internship: Organic, Sustainable Gardening Summer Internship: Organic, Sustainable Gardening Summary Title: Summer Internship: Organic, Sustainable Gardening ID: 1299 Department: Internship Description Objective To learn to grow food, grow natural landscapes, and the art of bee keeping. Using organic methodology to accomplish these goals, we will cover IPM, composting, companion planting, permaculture ideology and other relevant subjects. Summary At Shedd Aquarium, we have a variety of organic gardens around the building that have been developed as educational experiences for our visitors, interns, and Green Gardeners. We will be installing garden additions in mid-May and learning about soil, IPM, growing food and caring for natural landscapes throughout the season. Interns will work independently and with our team to learn the skills needed to care for these landscapes. Responsibilities & Duties Demonstrate commitment to Shedds vision, mission and values Partner with the Manager of Horticulture to learn about greenhouse gardening and sustainable methods Partner with Shedds Manager of Horticulture to learn about the skills required for growing healthy gardens. Projects May Include Planting vegetable starts from the greenhouse and growing food crops in our display gardens. Preparing new planting areas and planting annual displays. Maintenance of native landscapes. Weeding, watering, and dead-heading the current displays. Assisting with bee care and honey harvest. Other projects as assigned. Qualifications The intern should be studying Horticulture, Urban Agriculture, Environmental Studies or similar. Previous horticulture training helpful, but not required. Ability to handle multiple projects, strong communication skills, outgoing and friendly personality. Must maintain confidentiality. A strong desire to learn in this field. Time Commitment Approximately 21 hours per week, Monday-Friday. The exact schedule will depend on intern availability.
