    Job Description

    We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Geologist/Petrographer to join our Lawrenceville, GA laboratory. In this role, you will assist in the analysis of aggregate (rock), concrete, and other construction materials using petrographic techniques to assess material composition, quality, and potential causes of deterioration.

    • Conduct petrographic examinations of concrete, aggregates, and other construction materials following ASTM and industry standards.
    • Prepare samples for microscopic analysis.
    • Utilize polarized light microscopy (PLM) and reflected light microscopy (RLM) to evaluate rock and concrete samples.
    • Conduct particle counts of rock samples as well as hardened air void counts (ASTM C457) on polished concrete samples.
    • Assist in conducting chemical and physical tests related to concrete and aggregate.
    • Document findings and assist in preparing technical reports for clients.
    • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
    • Assist senior petrographers, geologists, and clients to support investigations and project needs.
  • Qualifications

    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Geology

    Experience

    • 0-2 years of experience in petrography, construction materials testing, or related laboratory work (internships or academic research in mineralogy or petrography preferred).
    • Basic knowledge of rock and mineral identification.
    • Familiarity with petrographic microscopy techniques and sample preparation.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail and ability to document findings accurately.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working in a materials testing laboratory.
    • Hands-on experience with polarized light microscopy (PLM).
    • Familiarity with X-Ray Diffraction is a plus.
    • Familiarity with concrete mix design, cement chemistry, and construction practices.
