Job Description: SUMMARY:nbsp; The Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant is responsible for supporting the disability claims organization providing vocational expertise to evaluate and consult claims to support the Sun Life promise to our clients.nbsp; ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Evaluate all pertinent information and determine if claimant is a suitable candidate for return to work or the rehabilitation program * Counsel/advise claimants in vocational, motivational, and personal areas as well as in policy requirements and incentives regardingnbsp; return to work (RTW) and rehabilitationnbsp; * Maintain close, frequent contact with the claimant to provide the encouragement and support throughout the RTW and rehabilitation processnbsp; * Negotiate modified jobs for claimants who cannot perform all duties of a job as outlined in standard job descriptions either with the Policyholder or new employer * Identify accommodations, including assistive devices, that facilitate the RTW processnbsp; * Determine if referral to an independent rehabilitation agency/facility is appropriate and identify independent rehabilitation agencies/facilities near the claimant and select the most suitable agency/service for each clientnbsp; * Authorize and oversee the activities of rehabilitation agencies in connection with the cases that are assigned, and authorize payment for services rendered by those agencies, as well as monitor the quality of service provided * Work closely with claimant (and independent rehabilitation representative in assigned cases) to develop appropriate RTW goals and plans * Act as a liaison between the claims and other resources and obtain, coordinate, and disseminate the information necessary to enable the claimant to work, this may include locating sources of funding or referral to state and/or federal agenciesnbsp; * Identify occupations and their material duties and physical demands utilizing a variety of government and internal resources which may include contact with the claimant and employer * Perform transferable skills analyses * Coordinate with the claims staff to provide information regarding occupational, transferable skills and potential for impact of rehabilitation activity upon claim management next steps * Develop rapport with community resources and referral sources via telephone, in-person visits, and professional organizations * Participate in educational seminars, conferences, client presentations and association meetings to increase knowledge of the vocational rehabilitation fieldnbsp; * Maintain claim file through up-to-date documentation of telephone calls and vocational rehabilitation activity as required by established claim procedures * Accurately prepare monthly reports concerning vocational consulting activity and impact on RTW * Participate in research and education activities for the vocational consulting team and assist with the training of the in-house vocational staff and claim staff * Conduct labor market research and surveys utilizing internet resources and direct employer contact * Participate in formal and informal claim discussions to assist with claim management action items and to proactively identify potential for vocational rehabilitation ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: * Other duties and responsibilities as assigned QUALIFICATIONS: * Masters degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling or related field and CRC or CDMS certification required * 2-4 years experience in the vocational rehabilitation field required * Strong knowledge of vocational return to work protocols * Experience in the disability insurance industry preferred * Strong research, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving skills and decision-making skills * Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment * Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to be both pleasant and professional * Strong written communication skills * Ability to work well independently and in a team environment * Strong interpersonal and customer service skills * Ability to initiate and prioritize regular work duties and projects * Detail oriented, organized, the ability to multi-task, and strong time management skills * Strong computer skills, proficient in PC environment and MS Word, Excel, and email systems * Ability to work professionally and effectively with co-workers, clients, claimants, vendors and others with whom Sun Life does business Sun Life Financial promotes equal opportunity employment.
