    Job Description

    During an action-packed summer, Camp Assistants help our Recreation Staff run Summer Day Camp programming: a wide variety of fun, cultural, educational and sports related activities in the City. We seek qualified individuals to work as Camp Assistants at various facilities, including Silver Tree (Glen Park), Kezar Sports (Golden Gate Park), and Pine Lake (Wawona/Sunset).     Job Duties:
    The primary job duties of the Camp Assistant are to assist, organize and coordinate check-in/out, set-up/clean-up/take-down all the activities, prepare snacks, oversee lunch time, and overall supervise camp participants. This is a great steppingstone for those seeking a temporary summer job in the world of Recreation.

    Assignments:
    There are four general areas available for assignments. Work hours are from approximately 8:00 am to 6:30 pm, depending on the specific camp, including after-care hours. (Operational hours of each camp assignment are subject to change depending on the needs of the specific camp.) The period of employment is from late May to mid-August. Some of our highly anticipated 2025 Summer Day Camps are as follows:

    Community Services: Camp for All, Everybody Plays, Look What I Can Do (Early Childhood Camp), and Mega Camp

    Cultural Arts: Silver Tree, Pine Lake, Harvey Milk Camp, Randall Museum Camp, and Sharon Arts Camp

    Aquatics : Junior Lifeguards, Learn to Swim, Sailing Exploration, and Sukahika Summer Camp (Lake Merced)

    Sports & Athletics: Kezar Sports Camp, Fog City Sports Camp, Girls’ Sports, and Skateboarding Camp

    Orientation:
    If you are hired, you will be required to attend the New Recreation Employee Orientation which covers Department procedures and policies as well as a Unit Orientation before starting work.

    How to Qualify:
    Anyone with a High School Diploma/GED qualifies. If you are graduating in June 2025, you must be a high school graduate by the start date of camp (approximately June 9, 2025). Qualified candidates will be required to submit a copy of your diploma/GED during the final offer stage. We will also accept written confirmation by your high school counselor that you will meet the graduation requirements by your start work date, however you will still be responsible for providing a copy of your diploma once you graduate.

    Desirable Qualifications:

    • Ability to work with people of varied age groups and backgrounds.

    • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form.

    • Present a neat, clean appearance at all times.

    • Ability to relate to the camp participants in a friendly and helpful manner.

    • Previous experience in working/volunteering with children (ages 5-11).

    • Previous customer service experience.

    Selection Procedures : The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.
