School Crossing Guard (Part-Time) Police/Special Services Salary $15.43 Hourly Location Memphis, TN Job Type Part-Time Division Police Services Job Number SCGFebReg2018 Closing 12/31/2018 11:59 PM Central Job Functions The City of Memphis is accepting applications for the establishment of a part-time hiring register. Hiring Register ranking will be determined by application date of those who meet the minimum qualifications. Vacancies may be filled by the established hiring register. Individuals appearing on the register will be subject to applicable background checks and drug testing. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS : Works under the general supervision of assigned supervisor in conjunction with a School Crossing Guard Coordinator to safely cross children/pedestrians on streets en route to and from school. Assists with traffic only where children/pedestrians are involved. Ensures all traffic is at a complete stop before children/pedestrians can enter the crosswalk or intersection. Enters the street before others to gain control of oncoming traffic by using a stop sign and whistle. Looks in the direction of the children/pedestrians and motions them to proceed into the crosswalk after control of the traffic is maintained. Engages and disengages flashing school zone lights. OTHER FUNCTIONS : 1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned. Typical Qualifications TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, give hand signals, blow through a whistle, and the ability to raise hand over head if necessary. Requires normal visual and audible acuity to detect the presence of vehicular traffic or children/pedestrians. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS : Work is performed outdoors, including exposure to changing weather conditions, such as wind, rain, ice, and extreme temperatures. Work schedule is two (2) hours per day when school is in session to include one (1) hour in the early morning and one (1) hour in the mid-afternoon. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Requires the ability to understand written and verbal directives. Must be able to effectively communicate instructions to the general public, including all ages. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of application. Special Requirements The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment.
