The Recreation and Parks Department currently oversee multiple facilities, parks, two pools and soon a new aquatics complex opening fall of 2018! The department also hosts an array of year round events and a variety of classes. Known as one of the Beach Cities, El Segundo offers a great location close to beaches, popular shops and restaurants. Now known as the city "Where Big Ideas Take Off", the City of El Segundo is a shining example of a creative community which celebrates innovation and business development. Under direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator has responsibility for planning and implementing the City's recreation programs, overseeing assigned sites, and supervising on-site staff. All assignments require a comprehensive knowledge of the development and provision of recreation programs and services, the ability to manage staff with great emotional intelligence, and the ability to complete various administrative responsibilities. In addition, CPR and First Aid certifications are highly desirable but can be acquired after employment. Essential Job Functions Under limited supervision, plans, coordinates, and implements a variety of community recreation programs, community center activities, teen center activities, aquatic programs and facilities, and special events. Supervises part-time recreation staff. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities: Plans, coordinates and facilitates assigned recreation activities and programs in a variety of recreation areas, such as: cultural arts, community programs and classes, teen center, senior programs and services, transportation, aquatics, athletic fields and facilities, sports, camps, special events, etc.; organizes and/or assists with special events, provides tours and group presentations; oversees facility operation and maintenance as needed, coordinates and/or assists Recreation Supervisor with special projects or ongoing programs. Promotes use of facilities and membership/participation in programs to the public; prepares press releases, publications (e.g. recreation brochure, newsletters, etc.) and other promotional materials (e.g. signage, banners, flyers, etc.); represents and promotes assigned program(s) through participation on committees, boards and community groups. Maintains statistical, attendance and program activity records, and prepares written and oral reports on assigned program; may assist with program budget for assigned area(s). Provides and promotes excellent customer service to internal and external customers; ensures adherence to department policies and procedures by staff and patrons. Hires, trains, schedules, assigns, reviews and evaluates work of part-time staff and volunteers; initiates corrective action; counsels employees. Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics: Knowledge of a variety of recreation programs. Knowledge of basic principles of supervision, including training and motivating people. Knowledge of special certifications or licenses required in assigned programs. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to recreation programs and facilities. Working Conditions: Regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds. Based on assignment, may be exposed to smells of pool chemicals. Exposure to environmental conditions present at City pools and related facilities and locations. Exposure to various weather conditions present at indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and/or areas. Licensing/Certification Requirements: A valid California Driver's License. Based on assignment, current certification in First Aid, CPR, Lifesaving, and Water Safety Instruction may be required. Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree in Recreation/Leisure Management, Physical Education, Public Administration or a related field, and two (2) years of experience in the implementation of recreation activities and programs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Tier II2%@60 for individuals employed by the City on or after 12/30/12 who are already PERS members. Tier I and II members single highest year coordinated with Social Security and Medicare. PERS 2%@62 for new employees/members hired on or after 1/1/13 have three year average coordinated with Social Security and Medicare and payment of 50% of normal cost (6.25%). Retiree Medical: City offers paid retiree medical insurance at same rate as active employees. Medical Insurance : $1,115.67/month for employee and dependents' medical insurance under PERS. Voluntary enrollment in EAP Outpatient Tier @ $9.52/mo. Educational Incentive : Up to $334.21 for B.A. if job doesn't require it. Must be approved by Department Head. Work Schedule: 9/80 with alternating Fridays off. Holidays : 11 fixed paid holidays plus 1 day of personal leave/floating holiday per year. Vacation Leave : 96 hours (1-5 years); 120 hours (6 10 years); 144 hours (11 15 years): 176 hours (16+ years). Leave can be used after 6 months of service. Annual cash conversion option.
