Job Title -Fire Prevention Inspector -Location -North Las Vegas, NV, US -Organization Name -LDCS- Building & Fire Safety -Department Description -Job Summary -JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal or designee, performs a variety of tasks including inspecting buildings and property to enforce adopted local and states fire prevention codes and related ordinances; performs final functional tests and inspections on fire protection systems and equipment.; advise, educate, and instruct the general public in proper fire and life safety methods and practices. -Minimum Qualifications -ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:(Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following) Conduct the most technical and complex fire and life safety inspections of existing commercial, industrial, multi-family residential and public assembly buildings for the abatement of fire hazards, maintenance of fire protection systems, business license, referrals, and complaints; perform requested inspections of new construction projects; review submitted documentation, verify required permits, and inspect the location and set-up of temporary special events; inspect businesses prior to issuance of a business license; inspect and witness the testing of new fire protection and life safety systems; identify unsafe business practices or hazardous conditions related to fire protection and life safety systems; and develop corrective recommendations. Plans, organizes, and arranges daily, weekly, and monthly work schedule and establishes priorities to complete scheduled and/or assigned work within departmental parameters. Consistently and efficientlyworks toward meeting daily, weekly, and monthly goals. Inspect various properties for compliance with the locally adopted fire and building codes, adopted ordinance(s) and standards and enforce laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to the servicing of, removal of or tampering with fire protection equipment, the accumulation of combustibles, the maintenance of property, and other local and state fire laws. Cooperate as needed with other City departments and government agencies where joint enforcement is appropriate. Review and interpret construction plans and specifications for compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and standards. May perform professional level plans examination including, but not limited to, review of technical documents to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes, ordinances, regulations and national standards. Instruct property owners and occupants regarding the removal of fire and life safety hazards; instruct the general public regarding fire safety and prevention methods; prepare and deliver public informational and educational presentations to various organizations, schools and the general public on a variety of fire safety and prevention topics. Must be sufficiently adaptable to accept and perform in a timely and effective manner work assignments that are outside the normal (day-to-day) routine. Research codes, ordinances, and standards and provide specific code references to citizens, contractors, developers, and those dealt with in enforcing the fire code to educate those contacted and defend the Departments position on these issues. Research, locate, and contact the ownership of specific addresses or Assessors Parcel Numbers (APN) to mitigate and/or resolve issues noted on properties that violate adopted fire codes, ordinances, and standards. Issue notices of violation and citations; assist in the prosecution of violators. Follow up on inspections and investigations in accordance with Department policy ensuring that ministerial acts are being met; prepare reports on inspection and investigative activities performed keeping immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. Assist in mentoring and orienting new staff on the fire prevention inspection methods, techniques, policies, and procedures of the Division. Prepare daily and monthly action reports in accordance with Department policy. May also prepare periodic and special reports on all inspections and other activities; prepare reports and maintain records using an electronic database and other common office software. Respond to, investigate, explain, and resolve sensitive citizen inquiries, complaints, and requests for service relating to fire hazard complaints from the public and other agencies to achieve fire and life safety compliance in accordance with locally adopted fire and building codes, adopted ordinance(s) and standards. Shall maintain confidentiality of complainants. Observes and follows established City and department policies and procedures in the daily conduct of the job. Attend in-service training classes as required and stay abreast of changes in local and state fire and related codes. Cooperate with and respond to complaints from fire suppression crews to mitigate identified issues, including but not limited to obstructed or slowed fire department access, hazardous materials or property conditions, water supply problems, and fire protection system malfunctions. Maintain cooperative, positive, and appropriate business relationships with citizens, co-workers, supervisors and managers, and customers. May serve in an ICS/NIMS position at post-emergency scenes involving fire investigation, significant incidents, and/or disasters. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. AND One year of work experience in one or more of the following fields: Plans review (Examination); Structural inspection; Life safety systems design, installation or inspection; Architecture; Engineering; OR One year work experience that required the frequent interpretation, explanation or enforcement of codes, regulations or formal written standard operating procedures, to include frequent heavy public contact in an enforcement capacity; OR Successful completion of 30 semester credit hours of fire science core courses; OR Two years as a full-time uniformed employee of a public or private fire department; OR Five years as a documented part-time or volunteer uniformed member of a fire department. License, Certificate, Special Requirements: Possession of an appropriate, valid drivers license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. Possession of current certification from the International Code Council as Fire Inspector I at time of application. Beginning January 1, 2018, International Code Council Fire Inspector II will be required and maintenance thereafter for the duration of employment. Beginning January 1, 2018, possession and maintenance of certification from the Nevada State Fire Marshal as Fire Inspector I and Fire Inspector II will be required and maintained thereafter. Possession and maintenance of current certification from National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as Fire Inspector I and II will be accepted in lieu of NSFMs certifications for Fire Inspector I and II and this certification must be maintained for the duration of employment. Shall obtain the following National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications; ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 700, and ICS 800 within 12 months of the date of appointment. -Selection Process -Candidates whose education, experience, skill and training most closely meet the needs of the position may be considered for an award of the position.
