2018 The City of Stockton is currently seeking to fill two (2)
Maintenance Repair Technician I vacancies in the Public Works
Department. The incumbent will typically work a City of Stockton 9/80
schedule: 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:30
p.m. Fridays, with every other Friday off. The incumbent in this
position may be required to work overtime as needed by the department.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in
a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by the Trades and
Maintenance Bargaining Unit. (Classified/Represented) This recruitment
is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time
City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional

direct supervision, performs both routine and skilled heavy, physical
work in performing a variety of duties such as installation, maintenance
and repair of streets, public right-of-way, City facilities, traffic
control devices, traffic signals, streetlights and parking meters;
operates trucks and a variety of hand and power tools and equipment
related to the work; may work independently using various methods of
graffiti abatement and removal; perform related work as assigned. CLASS
CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry-level class in the maintenance repair
technician series. Initially, under close supervision, incumbents learn
to perform routine, basic maintenance and repair of streets; traffic
control painting and sign work; installation, repair and maintenance of
parking meters, traffic signals, street lighting; and graffiti
abatement. This class is alternately staffed with Maintenance Repair
Technician II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after
successfully completing a one (1) year probationary period and gaining
one (1) additional year of experience, and completion of a combination
of job-related training courses and demonstration of basic on-the-job
performance proficiency and competency in work areas that may include,
but not limited to the installation, maintenance and repair of streets,
public right-of-way, City facilities, traffic control devices, traffic
signals, streetlights, and parking meters. PRINCIPAL DUTIES
(Illustrative Only) * Repairs and maintains road structure using a
variety of hand tools and mechanized equipment including, but not
limited to, shovels, rakes, jack hammers, brooms, tampers, "Bobcat"
tractors, dump trucks, vibratory rollers, etc. Work includes breaking,
removing, replacing, and clean up of asphalt surfaces, patching
potholes, crack sealing, and other asphalt repairs. * Designs,
fabricates, and assembles traffic control signs and devices in
accordance with established Federal and local standards. * Installs and
maintains traffic signs and markings in roadways and public right-of-way
in conformance with established standards and procedures, including
procedures involving mixing and cleanup of paints and hot thermoplastic.
- Performs complex maintenance and repair of parking meters. * Operates
and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment
including, but not limited to, power operated man-lifts, bucket trucks,
scissor trucks, often at heights approaching 35 feet off the ground and
observes safe driving and operating practices. * Cleans, paints,
rebuilds, and maintains traffic signals and street lighting equipment. *
Cleans, removes, and/or paints over graffiti on City facilities. *
Cleans and maintains assigned vehicles and shop areas, and maintains and
organizes inventory for shop materials and equipment. * May train and
direct the work of others, Alternative Work Program participants, or
assist others with any work assigned; may act in a lead capacity on
specific jobs. * Maintains basic written and computerized records of
daily work performed; observes safety rules and regulations including
work zone safety practices regarding working in traffic; cones and flags
work sites to secure from traffic; learns and practices recommended
safety procedures for all tasks; uses appropriate safety equipment. *
Responds to emergency situations in off-hours when necessary or as
required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: Graduation from
high school or G.E.D. equivalent, and six (6) months of work experience
as a laborer in construction or maintenance work. Work experience and/or
training in work zone safety are desirable. Other Requirements: * Must
possess a current, valid California Class "C" driver's license at time
of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter. * Must obtain and
maintain a Class "A" California driver's license within one (1) year of
appointment to the position of Maintenance Repair Technician I for
continued employment. Endorsements T and N are desirable. * Must possess
strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds
and to perform sustained physical labor. * Must be willing to work out
of doors in all weather conditions and work in confined spaces with
exposure to heavy traffic and other potentially hazardous substances. *
Must be willing to work overtime and off-hours shifts in emergency
situations. Knowledge of: * Techniques, materials, tools, and equipment
used in the maintenance and repair of streets, waste collection, and
street cleaning work; calibration of parking meters, including clock
mechanisms; traffic control painting and signing operations; electrical
and electronic installations, maintenance, testing and repair work;
graphic arts and sign fabrication; * Operation and maintenance of a wide
variety of hand, power and shop tools, test equipment and other
equipment common to the field and electrical and electronic work; *
Codes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to the work and traffic
control devices; * Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code
related to traffic painting and signing operations; * Basic arithmetic
and computerized record keeping; * Occupational safety principles and
precautions related to the work; and * Commercial driver's requirements
as established by state and federal laws. Skill in: * Performing heavy
physical labor; * Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power
tools used in the work; * Working in congested traffic conditions;
properly placing appropriate traffic control warning devices at the work
site such as cones, barricades, and warning devices; flagging and
directing traffic flow through construction or maintenance areas; *
Traffic control painting and sign installation and maintenance;
designing, laying out, and fabricating traffic signs; * Troubleshooting
and performing repair, maintenance and calibration of painting
equipment, parking meters and clock mechanisms; * Determining, through
the use of visual, mechanical, electrical or electronic testing, that a
piece of equipment or circuit is energized; * Must be able to recognize
and follow lock-out/tag-out procedures on energized circuits; * Reading
and interpreting, maps, drawings, specifications, and procedures manual;
- Preparing and maintaining basic records, work orders and documentation
related to the work; * Exercising judgment and initiative without close
supervision; * Communicating effectively in both oral and written forms
at a level to successfully perform the job; and * Establishing and
maintaining effective and harmonious relationships with those contacted
in the course of the work. The Examination: Applicants who qualify in

The examination process may include a written examination weighted 100%.
