Under the general direction of the Train Control Upgrade Project Manager and supervision of the Lead Project Planner (Transportation Planner III), the Transportation Planner II plans the procurement, development, and maintenance of the future Train Control System, and assists in the planning of future subway and surface rail operations. This position is responsible for assisting the Project Manager in establishing project schedules, organizing project meetings, meeting with project stakeholders, and developing procurement plans, policies, and procedures.
The Train Control Upgrade Project will be delivered through a series of contracts with the technology vendor and other firms providing installation, construction support, technical expertise, and professional services. The Transportation Planner II will assist the Project Manager in developing the business requirements for these contracts and planning the activities of staff including the train control supplier and contractors. The Transportation Planner II will be responsible for preparing and presenting project updates, and planning project phasing, including scheduling design workshops and installation activities. The Transportation Planner II will also support the environmental review of the project under CEQA and NEPA. The Transportation Planner II will represent the project in numerous interdepartmental coordination efforts, including meetings and communications.
In addition, the Transportation Planner II will be responsible to the Project Manager for program evaluation and capital planning activities; they will be expected to respond to reporting and evaluation requirements from the Finance Department, funding agencies, and project controls. In this role they will assist in the creation of grant applications and the development of application materials, including modeling project outcomes, research, and writing reports.

Additional transit planning and/or transportation planning experience beyond the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for year basis.
Additional post-graduate education as described in item 1 of the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for required experience on a year-by year basis (30 semester units/45 quarter units equal one (1) year of experience).
