    CITY OF PROVIDENCE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURC ES ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY Water Supply Board UTILITY WORKER IN TRAINING Salary: 18.759/HOUR Job Type: Union Date posted: November 28th, 2018 Summary Under supervision of the Supervisor of Water Maintenance or the Crew Leader, the Utility Worker in Training performs manual labor doing a variety of semi-skilled tasks relative to the operation of a water facility; and related work as required. This position will require a CDL, and will be required to obtain a RI Distribution Level I Operators License within one year of hire or transfer to Transmission & Distribution. SALARY REQUIREMENTS MET $18.759/Hour No CDL No Certification Additional.50/Hour CDL STIPEND W/CDL (must be obtained w/in 6 months) ** Level I-D Certification NO CDL $19.759/Hour plus .50/Hour CDL STIPEND Level I-D Operator in Training Certification and CDL ** Must take certification exam w/in 6 months of appointment and must obtain certification w/in 1 year of appointment ** Duties & Responsibilities 1. Performs semi-skilled and some skilled work requiring light and heavy manual labor. 2. Works with various crews, as assigned, laying out water pipes, valves, hydrants, blow offs, air relief valves, gates, and service boxes. 3. Operates pneumatic, gasoline, and electric tools including, but not limited to, paving breakers, hammers, drills, saws, and compactors. 4. Operates CDL required vehicles as assigned. 5. Performs tasks including, but not limited to, building custodial, snow removal, painting, yard work, and cleaning as assigned. 6. May be asked to direct traffic during construction. 7. May be required to keep simple records. 8. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications 1. High school graduate or equivalent. 2. Minimum of two (2) years experience performing manual skills in a construction or utility environment. 3. Must possess and maintain a valid State Drivers License. 4. Must possess and maintain a Class B, CDL with Air Brake endorsement within 6 months of appointment, hire or transfer. 5. *Must obtain a Level I-D Drinking Water Operators License within 1 year of hire. 6. Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions. 7. Ability to perform arduous work under adverse weather conditions. 8. Flexibility to rotate between three (3) shifts and to work a non-standard workweek if required. 9. Educational aptitude assessment for both english reading proficiency and math proficiency required at an 8th grade level; as a pre-employment/assessment qualification. 10. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job. *Failure to test for Level I-D Water Operators Certificate and/or failure to obtain a Class B CDL within the first 6 months of hire, transfer or appointment will be cause for termination. Failure to obtain Level I-D Water Operators Certificate in one year from date of hire, transfer or appointment will be cause for termination. In the event that an existing employee transfers to the division, failure to meet these requirements within the same time frames will be cause for reassignment to any other entry level vacancy should a position exists and at the corresponding hourly rate of that position.
