Department of Technology Student Intern Program, Summer 2025 – Computer Engineering, Computer Science/Information Services (5380)
Job Description
College students in Associate, Undergraduate, and Graduate Degree Programs studying the following are encouraged to apply:
Interns will gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced professional engineers, technologists, and public safety specialists while participating in various activities in the assigned DT discipline. The duration of this internship is 12 weeks, with an opportunity to extend it based on exemplary performance, department need, and available funding.
Selected candidates will be placed as Student Design Trainee I (Job code 5380). The compensation is $35.40 per hour.
The DT Summer 2025 Intern Cohort will start on June 17, 2025.
Intern positions may be available in the following Divisions:
Cloud Center of Excellence - Created in 2023, the Cloud Center of Excellence is tasked with supporting the creation and maintenance of Cloud solutions across the City. They help other departments make the most of their own or SFCloud provided services! SFCloud is the primary cloud provider for the City's storage needs. They also provide a number of remote computer, storage and data protection services to support the work of City agencies and departments. SFCloud ensures City services can scale and stay resilient without greater costs to residents.
Office of Cybersecurity - An evolution of DT's Cybersecurity division, the Office of Cybersecurity guides policy for agencies and departments citywide. The Office actively monitors and defends against potential cyber-attacks, in addition to ensuring all procurement has minimal cybersecurity risks. Read more on the Office of Cybersecurity's page!
Enterprise Applications - The Enterprise Applications team supports City and County of San Francisco teams by developing new software and by helping them leverage existing tools. Geographical Information Systems - The Department of Technology's GIS team manages and maintains San Francisco's address database which serve as the backbone for utilities, public works, public safety, and so much more. This work is also completed in partnership with the San Francisco Planning Department and Digital Services-Data SF to share this data publicly to support research and potential business endeavors.
IT Project Management - The Project Management Office (PMO) is the communicator and planner that coordinates dozens of engineers, analysts, and more across multiple departments. They ensure we can keep bringing new services and modernize City systems on-time and on-budget.
Infrastructure & Operations - The Infrastructure and Operations team constantly work to improve the technology that San Francisco government depends on, increasing performance, building resiliency, and facilitating daily business and future innovation through infrastructure, network, and data storage.
Premier Support Services - The Premier Support Services team provides high-level support and technical expertise for our internal business partners. Their work ensures cost-effective access to a suite of secure and powerful technology that enables innovation and productivity across San Francisco.
Public Safety - The Public Safety division actively expands and maintains connectivity and communication networks for first responders, departments, and underserved communities. Read more about the Fiber to Housing program online!
Service Desk - The DT Help Desk is comprised of general IT support and 24/7 network support through the Network Operations Center. DT collaborates across San Francisco to provide high quality customer technical support at a competitive price.

Qualifications
** Required Minimum Qualifications:**
Education: At the time you submit your application, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college in a Technology, Film/TV Production or related field.
Experience: No previous experience is necessary.
Desired Qualifications: We are looking for students who are willing to learn IT engineering practices and skills relevant to their assigned DT division and areas of interest. Students must be prepared to receive on-the-job training to acquire the ability to apply professional standards and develop relevant IT engineering skills.

Work Schedule
We work in a hybrid and traditional environment, and you may be expected to work onsite in the office up to 5 days per week. In-office workdays are determined by the nature of the work and scheduled by your supervisor.
Exempt employment
This role is exempt from the San Francisco Civil Service Rules, and employment is at the discretion of the appointing officer for a period that shall not exceed three years. (Category 18)
