Financial Disclosure Report: Not required Duties The incumbent will perform the duties of a Nursing Assistant. He/she will receive training in performing certain patient care duties. A sample of responsibilities are as follows: - Gives and assists with all types of cleansing baths and shampoos. - Gives skin care to prevent complications and promote healing. Gives and assists with oral care and hygiene including denture care. - Makes all types of beds. - Assists with the use of bedpans and urinals. Applies external catheters and maintains patency or drainage. Assists with bowel and bladder training. Assists in providing ostomy care for established and uncomplicated ostomies. - Assists patients in feeding themselves, or feeds those who cannot. Measures and records all intake and output (Excluding IV and tube feeding totals). - Maintains correct body positions. Turns patients as required using all types of supporting and comfort devices. Assists or provides patient transfers, activities, e.g. ambulation, litter, and or wheelchair to bed. One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. - English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Previous experience working in an in-patient hospital as a Nursing Assistant is preferred. Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant course is also preferred, however not required. Grade Determinations: GS-3 (Entry Level): A. Experience and Education: None beyond the basic requirements provided above. GS-4: A. Experience: One year of specialized experience as a Nursing Assistant or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments. -Or- B. Education. Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accreditied institution with courses related to nursing care. health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians; -And- demonstration of knowledge, skills and abilities related to: 1) ability to provide a range of patient care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients, 2) ability to observe patients physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to a supervisor in a timely manner, 3) ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, specimen collection, etc., and 4) ability to communicate effectively with patients, their families and other health professionals. GS-5 (Full Performance Level): A. Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following professional knoweldge, skills and abilities: 1) ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse, 2) ability to communicate orally with patients, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing and assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting, and 3) ability to recognize and react to emergent patient situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.; -Or- B. Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care possession of a bachelor's degree; -And- demonstration of knowledge, skills and abilities related to: 1) ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse, 2) ability to communication orally with patients, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing and assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting, and 3) ability to recognize and react to emergent patient situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. Physical Requirements: Good physical and mental ability is required. Position involves considerable strenuous physical exertion on a regular recurring basis. The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit and requires regular and recurring walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing and lifting up to 35lbs. Transferring patients and object may be required. Ability to work around moving objects and equipment. Normal hearing and visual acuity is required in addition to clear distincitive speech and manual dexterity. Must be able to wear a mask and protective clothing while working.
