    Boiler Plant Operator Intern (TCF) - Salt Lake City, UT - Overview Summary The Technical Career Field (TCF) is a national workforce development program within VHA that was designed to replenish technical staff in critically identified positions. The TCF career fields represent those technical fields where VA-specific knowledge and experience is desirable for success in the field. Individuals selected follow a formal training plan for two years during which they are trained, coached, and supervised by a preceptor. Preceptors are selected annually, through an extensive application process, for their technical expertise, their commitment to training and the suitability of their facility as a training location. *Selectees will be required to sign Mobility, Training, and Continued Service Agreements. The position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of WG-09. At the WG-7 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. This is a developmental position leading to a GS-09, performing assignments intended to broaden skills and provide practical experience leading to progressively more complex assignments performed under progressively less supervision. You will ultimately acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-09. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. The Boiler Plant Operator will operate boiler plants; assists in the operational maintenance of gas boilers and auxiliary equipment with manual or automatic controls to produce saturated steam; and operates dampers, induced and forced draft vans, heat exchanges, fuel and air heaters, pumps, fuel pressure, control valves fuel strainers, relief valves, water softeners, and other similar equipment. He/she must have sufficient knowledge of the operational phases of power boiler plant operations (e.g. water treatment, fuel systems, steam generation, and pollution control) to perform the duties of this position. He/she has a good understanding of boiler plant operations and associated equipment and systems. At this level the work will be performed with more supervisory oversight and guidance. Having core knowledge and skills associated with the fundamental boiler plant operations, the Intern performs less complex tasks independently and will require detailed instructions for new or more complex tasks. Physical Requirements: The work requires a moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, bending, climbing and crouching. Frequently lifts and carries boiler parts and chemicals weighing up to 40 pounds. For items over 40 pounds, obtains assistance from other workers or proper weight handling equipment. Eyesight must be sufficient to allow the employee to travel around the machinery in dimly lit areas within the power plant, and to read a variety of gauges, meters, and instruments. Must also be able to perform duties in abnormally high and low temperatures. Works indoors in a drafty, noisy, hot, dirty and sometimes cold or wet areas. Occasionally works outside which involves exposure to the prevailing weather conditions. Worker is subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, oil and fumes. Exposure to asbestos may occur while working on or near many components of the plant systems. The operator is also subject to stress while trying to maintain operation in an emergency situation. Subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment, and burns from acid, caustics, hot water, steam and contact with hot surfaces.
