Each year the Park District employs approximately two-dozen student interns with a primary program purpose to offer students a paid and enriching on-the-job learning experience, relevant to their area of academic study. Under direction of a project supervisor, an intern is assigned to work on a specific project under 30 hours a week, for a maximum of 600 hours. This year's program has 13 projects. The projects are located in various divisions which include: Acquisition, Stewardship, and Development; Operations; Public Affairs; and Public Safety. Minimum Qualifications Education:Must be in attendance at, or on legitimate leave from, a high school, trade school, college or university. Academic background compatible to departmental assigned projects. License: Must possess a valid California driver license. Mechanical and Cultural Methods of Integrated Pest Management: One intern will utilize GIS program, park maps, and field measurements to help quantify areas within parks where mechanical and cultural methods are used to manage vegetation instead of pesticides. 12 * # 13 15 Mapping Eelgrass Beds in San Francisco Bay: One intern will utilize a remote operated vehicle (ROV) to find and map eelgrass beds along shoreline properties operated by the Park District. These beds provide food, shelter, and spawning habitat for a diverse assemblage of native species. Surveys are required before any restoration work can be done along the shoreline. Help with Bat surveys and data management, assist with nesting waterbird and listed rail surveys, and help with pitfall surveys of grassland reptiles.
