    Job Description

    Under general direction, as an Engineering Assistant you will assist the Hydraulic Engineering team to perform technical engineering and drafting of drawings and other graphic materials related to planning, design and construction of wastewater collection systems and drainage facilities projects.

    Important and Essential Duties:
    Your duties as an Engineering Assistant may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Preparing engineering drawings and other graphic material using manual drafting methods, computer-aided design and drafting software (AutoCAD), 3D renderings, and other software tools in compliance with engineering drafting standards.
    • Conducting field investigation and gathering, collecting and calculating field and department data, records and reports for the preparation of designs and drawings.
    • Making preliminary checks and reviewing drawings to ensure accuracy, engineering sufficiency and conformance to specifications.
    • Assisting in the preparation of cost and quantity estimates for engineering projects.
    • Processing contractor construction shop submittals through logging, transcribing and filing of materials; indexing, reproducing and maintaining files, drawings and computer databases.
    • Making trigonometric and other mathematical computations in the course of drafting work.
    • Operating and performing minor maintenance on equipment to produce drawings and other documents.
    • Reviewing drawing submittals from utility agencies or other City Departments and utilize the information submitted in the preparation of construction drawings.
    • Researching and reviewing record drawings to obtain as-built information.
    • Updating and maintaining engineering documents and drawing records.
    • Preparing memos, engineering and field reports, and letters.
    • Learning new drafting systems and standards as necessary.
    • Updating Geographic Information System (GIS) base maps for City’s wastewater collection system facilities.
    • Assisting the hydraulic engineering section to provide sewer system information to other agencies, the general public and contractors, and investigate flooding and odor complaints.
    • May drive a City vehicle to and from work sites.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Experience:
    Two (2) years of verified civil (including structural or transportation), electrical, or mechanical technical engineering drafting experience using CAD or BIM systems to prepare engineering drawings.

    License:
    Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

    Substitution:
    Additional education with major coursework in Computer-Aided Design and Drafting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

    OR

    Possession of a current and valid Autodesk Certified Professional and Expert certificate may be substituted for the two (2) years of verified technical engineering drafting experience above.

    ** CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT**
    Valid Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of wastewater pipeline methods, regulations codes and ordinances
    • Knowledge of Civil 3D Pipe Network
    • Knowledge of Map 3D GIS data
