    Nonprofit Development Intern First Defense Legal Aid - Chicago, IL 60610 Internship Organization Description First Defense Legal Aid is a legal services nonprofit that has been providing free, 24-hour, legal representation to people in Chicago Police Department custody since 1995. Since then, First Defense has expanded its work to include the education of Chicagoans about how to protect their constitutional rights. We undertake these activities to promote fairness and accountability in the justice system. Position Description First defense is looking for interns to contribute to our work this summer! Interns will likely join First Defense as part of a small cohort and will each partake in their own self-guided projects with guidance from First Defense staff. Internship positions are unpaid. The Nonprofit Development Intern will be responsible for expanding First Defenses financial and non-financial resources, primarily through grant writing, seeking in-kind donations, and partnership development. The Nonprofit Development Intern may also be responsible for conducting supplementary research and recruitment assignments in support of First Defenses mission. Responsibilities * Research grants that align with First Defenses mission * With supervision, draft grant proposals * Attempt to secure in-kind donations from companies and businesses * Research potential partnerships with local business schools, law schools, law firms, and other organizations that may align with First Defenses mission * With supervision, manage communication efforts with current partners * Assist with ongoing recruitment efforts, largely by phone and email * Provide support for other programming, such as Street Law Corps projects and community outreach / educational events Benefits of Internship * Visibility into the operations of an impactful legal aid organization * Mentorship from First Defense attorney and non-attorney staff * Development of grant writing, research, and communication skills
