    Job Description

    Under general administrative direction from the Electrical Design Section Manager in the Engineering Management Bureau, performs, reviews and checks engineering work of average difficulty in the field and office following established engineering methods and procedures, applies engineering principles and practices to electrical engineering problems, coordinate the activities of professional and technical engineering personnel and consultants performing engineering and administrative functions in connection with the planning, design, and design support during construction of projects.

    Essential duties:

    1. Prepares or assists in preparing, reviews and checks reports, calculations, designs, contract specifications, contract drawings, lists of materials, cost estimates, and schedules for a variety of engineering projects.

    2. Collects data to assess project needs and define project scope through site visits, review of existing documents, reports, drawing and manuals, performing measurements, collecting samples, or/and interviews with the stakeholders.

    3. Coordinate or assist in coordinating activities between in house engineering staff and consultants, other Infrastructure bureau professional staff, client enterprise department(s), and outside agencies needed to complete planning and design of contract package(s).

    4. During construction, conducts field inspections, responds to submittals, requests for information, design-related change orders and request for substitutions.

    5. May act as Lead Designer on engineering projects performing average difficulty electrical engineering work related to water department facilities, including conducting engineering studies and preparing reports, designs, calculations, cost estimates and specifications; and generate drawings using AutoCAD and other electrical engineering software tools.

    6. Conduct meetings and make presentations to staff, committees, approval agencies, clients and the general public. Prepares meeting minutes.

    7. May exercise limited supervision over drafting personnel during the preparation of drawings and the performance of fieldwork, may direct activities of technical and/or clerical staff and student trainees; prepares correspondence.

    Class 5201 performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from an engineering program that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) with a major in the field of study related to the specialty area defined for each position;

    OR

    2. Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from a non-ABET accredited engineering program with a major in the field of study related to the specialty area defined for each position; AND possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

    Required Engineering Degree per specialty:

    Electrical: Electrical Engineering

    OR

    3. Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the field required for each specialty from the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.

    Note: Most positions require a valid California driver license.
