To view the MOS codes please click on link below and click on the appropriate occupational category. http://www.hr.sao.state.tx.us/Compensation/JobDescriptions.aspx -General Description -General Transportation Tech II or III: Performs routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection; routine and contract maintenance inspection; material and process inspection; laboratory testing; calculations; drafting; design; traffic and accident data collection; surveying and the use of surveying equipment, pavement data collection and evaluation; bridge inspection; construction record-keeping; plan review; Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) processing; skilled roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. -Duties -General Transportation Tech II or III: -Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites. -Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine. -Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck. -Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower. -Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills. -Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities. -Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required. -Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic; as required moves items related to these activities. -Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards. -Drives to picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations for maintenance. -Move/picks up litter and roadway debris. -Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush -Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI. -Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. -Competencies -General Transportation Tech II or III: -Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance -Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements -Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures -Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups -Preparing and maintaining records, files and reports -The use of personal computers and applicable programs, applications and systems -The use of applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade -The use of basic mathematical fundamentals. -The use of light and heavy highway equipment -Maintaining a safe working relationship -Communicate effectively -Follow verbal and written instructions -Work in cramped spaces (bend, stoop, crawl) and at varied heights -Move up to 50 pounds and occasionally move up to 100 pounds (See job requisition essential duties/remarks for examples of items to be moved.) -Education -This job requires the following: General Transportation Tech II: * None General Transportation Tech III: * High School Diploma or GED at time of application. -Work Experience -General Transportation Technician II This job requires the following: -1 year in Engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation or roadway maintenance work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) -No Supervisory Experience Required General Transportation Technician III This job requires the following: -2 year in Engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation or roadway maintenance work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) -No Supervisory Experience Required -Licenses and Certifications -General Transportation Tech II or III: The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job: -Safety Impact Certificate -Commercial Driver License Class A (Must have or obtain within 120 calendar days from date of employment) Safety Impact and Commercial Driver Certifications are not required at the time of application. Certifications will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire. Other Conditions: -This is a Safety Impact position as well as a Commercial Driver Position and will be subject to random drug testing. -This position requires driving for TxDOT -Conditions of Employment -General Transportation Tech III must have a Commercial Driver License at time of application. -General Transportation Tech II must have or obtain a Commercial Driver License Class A withing a reasonable timeframe. -This position requires you to drive for TxDot on a regular basis. -Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver and safety impact positions. Commercial drivers and safety impact employees will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment. -Required to work weekends and holidays. -Required to work hours other than 8 to 5. -Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions. -Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements. -Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis. -Driver's record check will be conducted by the Department.
