    Conductor Job ID: 33248 Department: Rail Transit Location: Journal Square Transp. Center Responsibilities Conductors are responsible for managing the overall safe, on-time operation of their individual trains within the scope of the rules of the Transportation Department. The essential functions include, but are not limited to: * Communicate information to passengers, crew and other railroad employees in person and via onboard communication channels * Enforce and abide by train safety rules * Operate train doors at station stops and assist customers on and off trains as necessary * Read, understand, comply with bulletin orders, general orders and other applicable rules of the Transportation Department * Manage emergency situations such as medical emergencies, equipment breakdowns and evacuation of passengers if necessary * Verbally direct the movement of trains * Provide professional customer service to passengers * Register for duty on time * Prepare trains for service and conduct complete train check after the train has reached its final destination to make sure all passengers have disembarked Work Shift: Conductors are required to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Physical Ability: Conductors must be able to lift 40lb weight, climb up the train, walk on the tracks, move from car to car while the train is in motion. Training Program: Conductors undergo a training program of approximately 8 weeks. In this training, conductors will participate in a combination of classroom and field training and will receive assessments weekly. Conductors are required to successfully complete training and obtain the required Certification as mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Failure to do so may result in termination from employment. Qualifications Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position: * 2 years of verifiable work experience involving customer service. * Far vision must have at least visual acuity of 20/40 in each eye with glasses. * Contact lenses must be worn subject to medical approval. * Near vision must be equivalent to 20/40 with or without glasses. * Must have normal color vision. * Must be available to work various shift schedules including weekends, holidays and overnight shifts. * Must be able to perform the essential functions and to meet all physical requirements set forth by FRA with respect to Conductors. Age Requirements: Candidates must be 21 years of age or over on the date of appointment Desired Ideal candidates will present the following profile: * 3-4 years of verifiable work experience involving customer service involving assisting a customer, providing direction and responding to customer needs * Work experience demonstrating skills in clear and effective verbal communication * Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information. * Ability to maintain alertness, awareness, and vigilance at all times. * Professional experience working in capacity requiring initiative and responsibility. Some prior mechanical experience preferred. * Associate Degree or technical/vocational training preferred. * Ability to work safely and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations. Compensation & Benefits The current starting salary is $25.38 per hour, which is subject to union agreement. Benefits: RRB Pension
