Job Description: UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE EXECUTIVE OFFICE FOR IMMIGRATION REVIEW UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION COURT PHILADELPHIA , PENNSYLVANIA The U.S. Department of Justice has an opening for one legal intern with the Executive Office for Immigration Review at the Philadelphia Immigration Court for the spring of 2019. Only current law school students are eligible to apply. Prior knowledge of immigration law is helpful, but not required. Strong research and writing skills are required. Applicants MUST be U.S. Citizens and must successfully complete an FBI background check before beginning their internships. The types of projects assigned vary depending on the courts docket and will include: research and preparation of memoranda on complex legal issues, including the interaction between criminal and immigration law; drafting decisions on motions pending before the court; and drafting decisions on applications for relief from removal, including asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under Article 3 of the U.N. Convention Against Torture. The Immigration Judges and the Judicial Law Clerks will take the drafted decisions under advisement. Interns can expect to complete assignments that may later be used as writing samples. In addition, interns will have the opportunity to observe a variety of matters brought before the court. The interns will work primarily under the supervision of the Judicial Law Clerks, but interns will also have substantial interaction with the Immigration Judges. The internship is an unpaid and volunteer position. Students may be eligible for academic credit or work-study funding. Students who are interested in receiving credit or work-study are strongly encouraged to contact the appropriate person at their law school to determine their eligibility. A commitment of 15-20 hours a week for the duration of the semester is optimal. Interested students must submit a resume, 5 to 10 page writing sample, unofficial law school transcript, and cover letter detailing their interest in immigration law.
