Community Corrections serves an important role in keeping our community
safe. The Department works to prevent the recurrence of crime among
adult offenders by supervising them and connecting them with the
resources they need to change problem behavior. Community Corrections
supervises approximately 3,600 offenders using a range of evidence-based
strategies, while working in partnership with the Courts, law
enforcement, and the state Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision.

Corrections is recruiting for both Probation and Parole Officers I and
II. Depending on qualifications, appointments to these positions could
be as a Probation and Parole Officer I or II. PROBATION and PAROLE
OFFICER I (salary range $27.30 - $34.83 per hour) Incumbents in these
positions perform probation and parole counseling with adult offenders;
conduct needs assessments and develop probation plans; monitor probation
and parole compliance and maintain caseload records; and participate in
search and arrest of offenders under the guidance of a Probation and
Parole Officer II or Supervisor. Incumbents in these positions will
advance through flexible staffing to the Probation and Parole Officer II
after demonstrating full-skill proficiency in all responsibilities and
duties, completing the field training education program and attaining
Probation and Parole Certification through the Oregon Department of
Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). PROBATION and PAROLE
OFFICER II (salary range $31.60 - $40.36 per hour) Incumbents in these
positions perform probation and parole counseling with adult offenders;
conduct needs assessments and develop probation plans; monitor probation
and parole compliance and maintain caseload records under the guidance
of Probation and Parole Supervisor in the Community Corrections
Department. This position may exercise supervision over case monitors or
other personnel of lower grade. This recruitment is underway to create a
pool of candidates eligible for several new positions and vacancies in
the Probation and Parole Division. This recruitment may also be used to
fill future full or part-time Probation and Parole I and II vacancies.

apply. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to,
the following: PROBATION and PAROLE OFFICER I * Interviews adult
low-risk offenders on probation or parole to assess offender needs and
risk; assesses social, emotional, and economic status; refers offenders
to community agencies as needed; counsels offenders on probation/parole
procedures, personal problems, and establishment of personal goals and
plans; and confers with offenders' families and collateral sources of
information. * Maintains regular contact with low-risk offenders and
monitors their activities; provides continuing assessment and counseling
according to the offenders' needs and progress; monitors offender
progress in meeting probation/parole conditions such as fines,
restitution, enrollment in drug or alcohol treatment programs; and
contacts service agencies, employers, and clients' families. * Provides
probation/parole services and group counseling to released residents of
the residential center; and develops individual treatment and financial
plans for residents in coordination with resident supervisors. *
Provides counseling service to incarcerated clients classified as low
risk; interviews incarcerated clients, assesses needs, and works with
incarcerated clients to determine treatment goals; and refers
incarcerated clients to County and community resources as needed. *
Writes reports related to offender compliance and confers with courts on
low-risk offenders; reports violations and changes in status; and writes
early termination and bench probation requests to courts. * Prepares
presentence reports for courts; makes recommendations on sentencing
requirements; performs transfer, abscond, and other investigations on
low-risk offenders. * Attends court hearings; documents, testifies, and
makes recommendations at probation/parole compliance and presentence
hearings. * Maintains records of low-risk client cases including
interviews, assessments, services provided, and probation/parole
progress. * Participates in service resource development for low-risk
client treatment and in-service evaluation programs. * Participates in
search and arrest situations under the guidance and oversight of a
Probation and Parole Officer II or supervisor. * May participate in
casework related to medium risk offenders under the guidance and
oversight of a Parole and Probation Officer of a higher grade. * Attends
staff meetings, professional conferences, and training programs.
PROBATION and PAROLE OFFICER II * Maintains regular contact with clients
and monitors activities through office and home visits; offers
continuing assessment and counseling according to clients' needs and
progress; monitors progress of meeting probation/parole conditions such
as fines, restitution, and enrollment in drug or alcohol treatment
programs; contacts service agencies, employers, and clients' families. *
Maintains records of client casework, including interviews, assessments,
services provided, and probation and parole progress. * Assesses,
through personal and collateral contact, the level of risk or danger
presented by the offender; places the offender in secure custody when
the offender violates conditions of supervision or when they pose a risk
to self or others. * Interviews adult offenders on probation or parole
to assess client needs; assesses social, emotional, and economic status
and refers clients to community agencies if needed; counsels clients on
probation/parole procedures and personal problems; counsels clients in
establishing personal goals and plans; and confers with clients'
families. * Confers with courts on client probation and parole
compliance and completes reports and sanctions as needed; reports
problems and personal progress; processes early termination requests and
reports to court; develops individual case plans and financial plans for
clients' payment of fines and restitutions. * Provides probation/parole
services and group counseling to released residents of department's
community residential center; develops individual treatment and
financial plans for residents in coordination with resident supervisors.
- Provides counseling services to incarcerated clients; interviews
incarcerated clients, assesses needs, works with incarcerated clients to
determine treatment goals, and refers incarcerated clients to County and
community resources if needed. * Prepares presentence reports for
courts; investigates offenders' legal case and personal background; and
makes recommendations on sentencing requirements. * Conducts arrest and
search procedures in the office and field; facilitates secure transport
of offenders. * Attends court hearings; documents, testifies, and makes
recommendations at probation/parole compliance hearings; testifies at
presentence hearings. * Participates in service resource development for
client treatment and in-service evaluation programs. * Attends staff
meetings, professional conferences, and training programs. KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES Education and Experience: Minimum qualifications
and certification requirements are as follows: PROBATION and PAROLE
OFFICER I: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Bachelor's Degree in corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social
work, or a related field; AND * One (1) year of experience in
corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related
field. * Must meet all certification requirements as a Probation and
Parole Officer by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and
Training (DPSST) within 18 months of hire. * Must acquire and maintain
CPR and first aid certification. * Must be able to pass a post-offer
physical abilities assessment, psychological assessment, and the DPSST
pre-employment medical exam prior to appointment. PROBATION and PAROLE
OFFICER II: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would
be: * Bachelor's Degree in corrections, criminal justice, counseling,
social work, or a related field; AND * One (1) year of experience in
corrections, criminal justice, counseling, social work, or a related
field. * Must be certified as a Probation and Parole Officer by the
Oregon Department on Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) upon
hire. * Must acquire and maintain CPR and first aid certification. *
Must be able to pass a post-offer physical abilities assessment,
psychological assessment, and the DPSST pre-employment medical exam
prior to appointment. If you have completed education in a foreign
college or university and are using this education to meet the minimum

education is comparable to that received within the United States'

thorough background investigation, and meet the standards set by the
State of Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training
(DPSST). * Physical Requirements and Work Conditions: These positions
require successful candidates occasionally to perform physical effort.
Incumbents will participate in search and arrest situations that require
walking, running and the ability to restrain clients. Successful
