    We have an exciting opportunity for an intern on our Des Moines, IA Development Team. As an intern supporting our Heart Challenge and Heart Ball events, you will play a key role in driving the success of these impactful campaigns. Your responsibilities will include a variety of tasks that contribute to the planning, execution, and follow-up of these life-saving initiatives. The intern will also be able to work with the communication team and develop social media content and other communication strategies.

    The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in various disciplines, including volunteer recruitment/management, community event planning and management, public health research, community partner networking/connection, and program development/implementation.

    Internship Overview:

    Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

    Internship Duration:1/21/25 – 5/2/25

    Location: Hybrid Position - Intern must be based in Des Moines, IA, or the immediate surrounding area.

    Salary: $23.00 per hour

    Internship Outcomes:

    • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others

    Responsibilities

    • Event Planning & Support: Assist with the planning, coordinating, and executing pre-event logistics, on-site event management for multiple community events.
    • Event Participant Outreach & Engagement: Conduct pre-event outreach to attendees of social events and conduct follow-up calls to past and current coaches/captains, top fundraising participants, and survivors to support participation.
    • Sponsor Support: Assist with sponsor presentation preparation and gathering materials for sponsor follow-up after meetings, helping to maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
    • Data & Reporting: Assist with pulling reports, data entry, and organizing event-related information to track progress and outcomes.
    • Administrative Support: Assist with administrative tasks such as preparing printed materials, assembling thank-you cards, and organizing event supplies.
    • Hands-Only CPR Events: Support the planning and execution of Hands-Only CPR demonstrations, helping promote our mission of creating a world of healthier lives.
    • Update and manage media contact lists
    • Create and post blog and social media content.
    • Assist with press release writing and distribution in support of local event promotion and disseminating mission/science/evergreen content.
    • Create media expert list and conduct research/interview experts for written pieces or quotes for future use in media efforts.

    Qualifications

    • Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in business, communications, public relations, nonprofit fundraising, or event management.
    • Experience/interest in promotion, sales, or fundraising.
    • Demonstrated excellence in written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working professionally with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
    • Effective oral and presentation communication skills.
    • Proficient in multiple social media platforms.
    • Basic knowledge of Canva.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
    • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
    • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection and reliable transportation.
    • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
