Company Overview
Mental Health Resource Center is a not-for-profit Florida corporation that provides a wide range of mental health and behavioral health care services to the community such as 24-hour emergency services, inpatient psychiatric services for children, adolescents, and adults as well as outpatient services such as medication management, case management, and counseling.
Job Summary
The Activities Specialist helps to ensure quality programming to adults and children through the provision of structured recreational and socialization activities. The Activities Specialist designs groups, activities and events of an educational, therapeutic and social nature. The goal of the programming is to improve the skills of individuals receiving inpatient crisis stabilization services. The Activities Specialist completes documentation and shares information during shift report and team meetings.
The crisis stabilization units provide emergency psychiatric services. Most patients are admitted involuntarily to the facility via the Baker Act, the mental health act of Florida.
The normal length of stay on the unit for patients is typically 3-5 days. Due to the types of services provided, crisis stabilization units are a fast paced working environment and present employees with challenging and rewarding opportunities. Employees work together and support one another in a friendly, team oriented atmosphere.
Responsibilities
Plans, schedules and conducts therapeutic educational groups on variety of population specific topics.
Designs activities and events to hold interest, motivate learning and provide entertainment.
Activities must be applicable for various functioning levels and capabilities.
Develops and displays schedule and/or calendar of events that supports the provision of groups and activities on a regular and consistent basis.
Manages and administers the Token Economy program. Reviews recommendations and operational issues with Clinical Team Leader.
Orders and maintains activity supplies for groups and programming, via purchasing department or obtaining goods in person.
Assists primary clinician in directing individuals towards obtaining goals established within the treatment plan.
Using standard instruments; collects and tabulates information from individuals served. Information may include standard data, i.e., re-admissions, or information about diagnosis or symptoms, i.e., anxiety, depression or trauma. Coordinates with Clinical Team Leader if data indicates an acute issue with an individual.
Performs daily documentation reflecting observations of individuals in group activities. Documentation includes level of participation, interaction, socialization and recreational skills. Verbally communicates this information during shift report or team meetings.
Completes and submits accurate weekly logs reflecting services provided.
Qualifications
In order to be considered, candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Art, or Human Services field. Experience with the mental health population preferred.
The Activities Specialist must be able to manage work assignments, complete tasks in a timely, accurate manner with minimal supervision, and interact therapeutically with patients and their families.
Candidates will need a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs, email and the use of the Internet.
Position Details This is a Full Time Days position: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.
