This position works with the Youth Leadership team in supporting and engaging youth involved in the Youth Leadership Program. We are looking for an innovative, enthusiastic and experienced individual with a passion for Youth Development, to continue our reputation of excellence in supporting the academic growth and character development in the youth involved in the Youth Leadership Program. In Chicago, less than 8% of students from low-income families graduate college by age 25. At Christopher House, Youth Leadership students (13-18 years of age) find a path to overcoming these odds through a safe, supportive environment where they can explore their interests, get academic support, and plan for their futures. Young people become goal-oriented, self-sufficient young leaders who succeed in post-secondary education and beyond. We guide students through the transition to high school and prepare them to persist through and excel in college. We are looking for an ambitious, outgoing, creative, empathic individual, committed to their own professional growth in order to maximize their impact within the Youth Leadership Program and school readiness of the youth and families, of the after school program. Responsibilities: Plan, implement and engage in activities that develop young peoples leadership, communication, decision making, teamwork skills, and academic progress, while providing youth opportunities to contribute to their community and provide support to ensure students make adequate yearly progress in school, prepared for high school, and attain post-secondary education. Provide academic assistance in completing homework, high school and college exploration, college financial aid assistance, while creating a supportive environment focused towards increasing and maintaining a high GPA. Work with the Youth Leadership team to plan and implement a year round (school year & summer) enrichment program that will enhance social, emotional and academic development. Develop programming that directly relates to students needs and interests such as; guest speakers, leadership council facilitation, high school and college exploration visits, community service, and job shadowing & career exploration opportunities. Facilitate monthly life skills workshops to educate students/parents to make healthy choices and maximize their future opportunities. Expose and prepare students for post-secondary opportunities through daily 1:1 tutoring sessions, ACT Prep workshop, team-building activities, and the development of positive peer and mentoring relationships. Trips are weekly on Fridays and once per month on Saturday and include field trips to various colleges/universities, recreational, social, and cultural activities, community service outings, outdoor experiential education and various other opportunities that may present themselves throughout the school year and summer.(Several same day & overnight trips throughout the year include activities: Canoeing, Rock climbing, High ropes courses, hiking, camping, and one summer 8-day Boundary Waters trip) Support outdoor education programs by communicating trip details to youth and parents, ensure youth are emotionally and physically prepared for trips, and provide positive adult modeling and mentoring throughout outdoor experiences. Integrate reflections and lessons learned from trips throughout program time. Work with Youth Leadership team and After School Matters, to design and implement an 8-week summer program that allows youth to learn job readiness and/or high school readiness skills. Lead weekly group discussions and activities that allow apprentices to process what they are learning and reflect on project accomplishments; upon project completion coordinate a final event where apprentices present to CH staff. (Invite community members outside CH to the event); ensure safety of teens and provide positive role modeling. Communicate agency policies to teens and parents; plan parent educational workshops related to postsecondary preparation; appropriately respond to parent concerns; demonstrate emotional maturity and serve as a positive role model for volunteers, teens and parents; ensure the groups safety on field trips. Ensure all needed documentation/data entry is completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner to ALL funding agencies and databases; meet with teens and parents to compile all needed documents for funding agencies; attend meetings as required o keep abreast of program changes and to ensure accurate record keeping; enter participants information into client database. As a staff member who has the authority to make purchases for the agency, must assure that all components of the Purchasing Procedures are being followed. Actively seek to align programs with best practices or standards for high quality. Ensure on time and accurate collection of data using organizations database and/or funder databases. Analyze data with team members to determine how to explain information related to findings and improvement strategies. Report findings to supervisor; make recommendations for improving quality of services and/or departments outcomes system; ensure successful implementation department strategies. Use outcome findings to enhance organizations public image and promote programs to families, volunteers, funders, and stakeholders. Qualifications : Minimum,1 year experience working, volunteering, and facilitating in group setting with youth ages 12 years of age and older. Demonstrates organizational and positive relationship skills. Experience working with low-income families and/or youth. Competence in tutoring at least 2 subject areas and familiarity with the college application and acceptance process. Education : Bachelors degree in Social Work, Education, Sociology, human services, or related field. Coursework related to youth development, education, psychology or social work required.
